Muse - Drones

Okay er... I actually think it's very good?

I mean it's still nowhere near the first three albums but it's a marked improvement over the past few years.

Unfair that my post got deleted, bit silly as I'm not telling people where to download it just stating a simple fact.

What songs did you enjoy?

Nothing will compare to the first 4, but T2L was better than TR. This is far too Queen and generic for my liking

Psycho is an odd one - listened to at home it's good but nothing extraordinary, but with a few hundred other fans at the Exeter Uni concert it's fabulous. :D

I currently quite like Reapers, The Handler and Defector. The Globalist is a bit odd - it's ten minutes, yes, but it spends a good chunk of that just faffing around. The gist of it is decent but to call it that long is just wrong imo.

I actually think T2L is the weakest of the lot, too much was spent trying to be political and profound and it just needed to be Muse doing what they do best. But hell, I think Showbiz is the best album so what do I know? :p

The Globalist... erm... L'Arena Ennio Morricone - whistling song that features in Kill Bill among others? I do like the track, but not sure why they've included it in this! I sort of love it, and I sort of really, really hate it.

:Edit: Hmmm. Most of that was really not great. Beyond the whistling bit at the beginning (that is just stolen and not Muse at all) Globalist is seriously uninspiring Muse-by-numbers, not feeling it at all.

The thing about the Globalist it could have been everything people wanted.

The first and second parts are really, really good. It's just let down by the third and final part.
I find that's the main issue.

Given time to listen to it I really do think it's a very good album. For me the trio of Reapers, The Handler and Defector are the stand out tracks.

Before the album I always thought:

Showbiz > OOS = Absolution > BHAR > The Resistance > T2L

and currently I'm putting Drones somewhere around BHAR - not sure where exactly, i'll clarify that after a few more listens.

Yep, can confirm that after a few listens most of the album is freakin' sweet.

Really, really enjoying Reapers and Defector <3

I find Defector seems to lock in to the feeling I got when I discovered all their b-sides back in the day. Can't put my finger on it.

I just don't get muse ... It all sounds the same and that bass guitarist nodding his head like Churchill the dog ... Na

They have a sound yes, but it doesn't all sound the same, not by a long shot.

But Muse, as I said on this very board over ten years ago (much as I love them) are massively inconsistent.

They are capable of producing some great music, properly great music, but at the same time, they are capable of producing some right old crap.

Matt doesn't seem to be able to tell the difference between the two and just makes what ever he feels like and we take it or leave it.

My guess at the intro!

A: 12-9-5-9 x4
A: 13-10-5-10 x4
D: 11-8-5-8 x4
D: 10-7-4-7 x4
G: 12-7-3-7 x4
G: 12-8-5-8 x4
G: 12-9-6-9 x 4

:o:D:cool:

All sounds the same. Lawd. Their biggest problem is that they don't IMO. I totally agree that they're properly inconsistent.

Pretty sold on the entire album now, I don't think there's a bad track, even The Globalist seems to work within the context of the rest of the album, now I've given it all more time.

:ed: Nitefly - pretty sure your 7@A (you've marked as E doe?) string should be a 5. Unless my ears are properly broken. In fact Bro, dem strings be all kinds of weird unless I'm missing something. I assumed it was DADGBe, do they instead do some sort of SOAD style tuning for it?

No I'm just being a total boob - it's drop D.

String names edited! They were indeed very wacky in my post :p

EDIT - oh yes it's 100% a 5 on the A. What a complete fluff in writing that down :D Reminds me of the Andy James video on Angel of Death..... "Play this note 11 times" *plays it 13 times*.

Reapers is awesome, Defector is awesome, The Handler is awesome, Dead inside is good, Psycho is good, Revolt is OK, Aftermath is OK, Mercy is OK, The Globalist could have been awesome but it's OK, Drones is meh. Thus concludes my horrendous review.

In all seriousness though, I can't stop listening to the album as a whole... Not sure where I'd place it in amongst previous albums, I think pretty low in the pecking order but I am enjoying it, and it's grown on me a fair amount through the few listens I've had.

OOS > BHAR > Absolution > Showbiz > The Resistance > The 2nd Law > Drones

If TR was just Exogensis then it'd be number 2 on the list.
