Must have single player games?

Morrowind, it doesn't hold your hand like the modern games do, you can do what you like (kill main quest npcs if you want) and it has so much to keep you gripped. Then once complete, Oblivion and Skyrim. See you next year. :)

Company Of Heroes

Crysis

Dishonoured

Dying Light (Redeemed my interest in PC gaming I was about to sell up and get a console)

Just Cause 2 (Hours of fun)

Middle Earth Shadow Of Mordor

STALKER, all of them

These are just a few of the stand out games from my library that are a cut above the rest

Very different to games list but, Rimworld. It's still in alpha but dang it's a good time waster and can just be picked up and dropped. Loads of mods for replayability as well.

Perhaps too ambitious for a 970m but Witcher 3. You can get lost in this world.

These will run for sure:
Portal/Portal 2
Brothers - a tale of 2 sons
MGSV

All of the above + Max Payne 3

1 and 2 also if you dont care about graphics.

Good shout, though I wasn't quite as bothered about the third title.

I think a big factor in games these days is they take you out of the experience all too often by stopping you playing, throw in another cut scene, then allow a little more interaction before cutting you short again. :/

Games not mentioned so far:

Shadow Warrior - Best single player FPS in recent years IMO.
Talos Principle - Brilliant FP puzzler, superb story and awesome visuals.
Ori and the Blind Forest - Best platformer I've played in ages, bloody hard but it looks so pretty and sounds so good it doesn't matter!

When Ive been deployed Ive played..

Final Fantasy
Borderlands
Alien Isolation
Skyrim
DragonAge
Metro 2033/Last Light
Alan Wake
Max Payne
Half Life
Xcom
South Park
The Witcher
The Walking Dead
The Wolf Among us.

Loads really. There is masses of single player stuff out there. I just went on Kinguin and key sites and got stocked up. Next det Ill probably play pillars of eternity.

The Witcher 3 runs great on my 870m Laptop so a 970m will be even better. It will play anything with good graphics at 1080p.

Distant Worlds. Lose yourself for a few weeks.

Rimworld as mentioned earlier, albeit early access, is a fun sci-fi alternative to Prison Architect.

Judging by this list you will be occupied for a very long time haha. My two cents;

Offworld Trading Company
Factorio (still in alpha but entertaining)
