MX-5 Project log thread

Are the Larini exhausts not suitable then? I was pondering leaving the manifold out because of needing a turbo one, but I presumed the Larini would be suitable... Hmm :(

Well most turbo exhausts are not legal as they make too much noise, the turbo acts as a muffler to a certain extent and as such can get away with a less restricted exhaust. By all means do it, you don't NEED a turbo exhaust, but you'd be amazed at how much performance increase you get from a decent turbo exhaust.

The Larini's work well on MX5s so don't fret too much about it. It's just what I'd do personally. I mean with the exhaust it release a good 15bhp compared to the standard exhaust!!

Looks very well for 20 years of age! That said, it needs a very hard beating with the lowering stick, oh and some bolt on overfenders and big spacers ;)

4TW!

I ask as usually whenever i see MK1 MX5's their hoods are torn to bits. Then again, 43k in nearly 20 years - wow!

They only tend to last 10 or so years, the original vinyl ones anyway. Just replaced ours with a mohair/glass rear window from Mazmania - £450. Good replacements.

Howard - cautionary note with the suspension. I have replaced ours with Apexi stiffened and lowered stuff and it does expose a couple of little flaws, not least how the wing mirrors are (badly) connected. There is a welded bolt inside the doors and these rot for fun, something exposed by stiffer suspension. Not an expensive fix but worth noting as they come loose quickly and can fall off.

My jobs are: re-secure the bonnet properly after the *****'s who resprayed it obviously didn't and finish off the beesting aerial conversion - bargain mod from MX5 parts.

Yeah I'm gonna do the beesting aerial conversion, you can see my current aerial from space.

Thanks for the warning about the mirrors - I'll keep an eye on it after doing the suspension! I'm lead to believe the new suspension isn't just out and out stiffness, it's designed for road use as well as track use so shouldn't be bone shaking :)

Nice little log :)

Funny how only yesturday I found out I need to replace my clutch slave cylinder too (as you read in my thread) - also topping it up with the DOT4 fluid didnt make any difference, It was really hard to get into gear when I left work earlier :(

So next weekend I will be doing the slave cylinder and will be using your post as a place to start!

I also have a non standard battery, is that a clamp for it i see in one of the pictures? I have no clamp and it moves about a bit.

I think these cars will last forever with a bit of TLC, yours has many many years left with just 43K on the clock!

Hey Howard

Nice to see the bits you have done so far. one question- how much was the bodyshop bill on that dent? some little **** has driven into my car- and left a nasty scratch/ dent that stretches accross the front wing and the door!!

I see you are going for the sport drive kit too. i should have mine fitted in April sometime. I was at an autosolo not too long ago and there was a guy there with the puredrive kit and it seemed very planted and controllable (especially compared to my comedy body roll) so i am expecting good things.

Sort that slightly scabby battery tray out now while it's still pretty fresh - nitromors to get all the paint off, Bilt Hamber gel to eat the corrosion, then Jenolite/Kurust/Bilt-Hamber to stabilise it and then repaint - or it will haunt you in years to come, trust me!

£150 per panel I pay.

Lopez, I'll give that a go. IIRC it looks like rust but it's just mostly just down to the primer, or very very surface-rust... I'll have a poke around next week and sort it using your methods though, I think. I don't like to have to learn about rust prevention techniques but I guess I have to :D

Howard, I had a complete nightmare doing the slave cylinder today.

I made a special trip over to Moss yesturday to buy a slave cylinder, went to fit it this morning - all goes well untill I go to bleed it, LEAKS.

The little screw attached to a nut which is the feed line would not stop leaking, no matter what. I was tearing my hair out and concluded that the Moss slave cylinder was not the same as the original, so I took it back off again, used the internals in my old cylinder and refitted it, works fine for now!

Just a warning to those thinking of buying the Moss one, the thread depth for the feed line nut screw is about twice as deep as the stock one, resulting in epic leaks when trying to bleed the system.

Pretty much wasted a day on that

How accessible are the bit on these, is it an easy car to work on, as per my thread I want a nice little project, but only If they are easy to work on.
