MX-5 Project log thread

Do it

Changed the fuel filter today. It's a service part, and probably hasn't been done in 19 years

Bit of a messy job, and a real bugger to get the rubber flexible pipes off the filter, but I didn't get too much petrol on me... Good job I don't smoke ;) Took ages to get the pipe off of the "engine" end of the filter - that is the feed from the filter to the engine. The feed from the tank came off relatively easily, and I had a handy Biro pen to plug the pipe ;) Fuel does come out but it's more of a dribble if you depressurise properly :)

Car seems to rev up at low RPMs / tip-in a little easier now :)

£150 per panel I pay.

Lopez, I'll give that a go. IIRC it looks like rust but it's just mostly just down to the primer, or very very surface-rust... I'll have a poke around next week and sort it using your methods though, I think. I don't like to have to learn about rust prevention techniques but I guess I have to :D
A ***** crashed into my mx5, destryed front wing, bent bits behind the wing and bent the headlamp pod, also scratched the front bumper.

Managed to get it fixed for £200 plus parts :D (filling in the front bumper, painting new wing, blending with the door, painting a wing mirror and straightening it out)

Lets hope it's a quality job as it's about as back street as backstreet garages get.

How did you depressurise the system? Remove fuel pump fuse and run untill it stalls?

I have a switch wired to the fuel pump relay so I just flicked it and it stalled :) Removed the petrol cap filler before pulling off the hoses too

Howard are you a nutzer or OC member?
I browse the forums but I'm not what you'd call an active member tbh :)

Was yours behind a plastic cover to start with as well? I had a pig of a time trying to get those trim buttons out without damaging them  Especially the top ones in awkward positions!

Yep, was behind a plastic cover. I read that those are a bugger to get off, which is amusing, cos it took me about 5 seconds ;)

You have an mx5? I'm a nutzer by the way.

Howard,

Looking good there, I need to sort rust out on the kick plates too, may have a chat with you about it.

MSN's in my profile if you want it :)

I've only skimmed the thread so excuse me if this has come up already. I've just been trying to remember what little jobs I've done with my car - have you changed the gear stick upper and lower shift boots yet? And changed the turret oil? I did this on mine and found the rubber was totally shot and it made a very positive difference to the gear change.

Interesting your sill plates caused rust, I've checked mine and I've not got any rust there.... yet! I've had to have one of my sills just infront of the rear arch welded though (the usual spot!) because I think my car has lived outside all its life and the drain holes have never been unblocked. The other side isn't far behind :o

Not done this yet, read about it though! Might look into it, although I can't see how my gearchange can improve much, it's very precise lol :)

Whip the centre console off (it's only a few screws) and take a look. It may have been changed in the past or it'll just be in pieces and not doing much :p There was never a problem with my gearchange in the past, I just read up on it and decided to give it a go and everything feels more "positive" now. The changes feel far more fluid and less mechanical. It's a very quick job to replace them so I would really recommend it.

It also made the cabin a lot quieter on the motorway as previously I could see the road through it!

^This

I have also done this on my 5, when I took the centre console out I could see straight through to the ground. The upper and lower boot had totally gone, the oil in the turret was like water. Once replaced it removed a lot of road and other noise from the cabin, the gearchange is also more slick.
Its a really simple job to do and you dont need to get under the car or anything :p
