MX-5 Project log thread

Are you still thinking about selling your 5 Howard? My CTR is hopefully going this month, then in a few months time I'm going for an mx5 so may be interested :)

Now that the good weather is back and hopefully to stay, it's sort of re-kindled my love for it, so I'm not sure. Maybe later in the year, maybe I'll have another year out of it. You only live once. Will see how much the insurance renewal is, among other factors. I'll keep this thread up to date either way :)

What were you thinking of replacing it with.

I've always wanted to FI my mx5 but the amount of people who do and then get rid within a year amazes me, all while still singing their prases, but I just can't help but feel there is something not being said by ex owners of FI'd 5's

I can't help but think that a lot of people love the idea of a 200ish bhp sub-tonne car but don't have the driving skills to match. You can't really enjoy a car you're afraid of and can't handle, especially in the rain.

Depends on the person but for me this simply wasn't the case, as it isn't for quite a few people i know.

The reason i loved the 5 is twofold, on one hand you have a fantastic car which is great fun to drive, and on the other you have something which is ripe for modding, once you've gone through the process of adding FI (which in my case was the last thing to do to the car), you have no projects left to do, 50% of the enjoyment factor of the car is now removed so people sell up.

In the rain with the supercharger fitted the car is no different to when it was N/A, the power is so linier you hardly even notice the difference.

Yeah that might be a factor in a few cases but I reckon a lot of people go FI because it is the "thing to do" rather than a desire to mod the car.

This morning I got reasonable amounts of oversteer (which admittedly I provoked by keeping my foot in knowing what was coming) coming off a roundabout. More power would only make that easier...

It's hard to say, I do agree that turbo and supercharging is much more prolific amongst the community now then when I did it, back then it had much more of a wow factor, our days it's not so impressive.

For example I was the first which we know of to adapt the MK1 kit onto the Mk2, at the moment the latest thing seems to be people fitting BMW Mini superchargers (now that someone’s figured it out), we simply couldn't do that several years back.

I still think quite a few people sell because they've simply reach the end of the cars development process and get bored after a year.

Give it a go yourself and report back after a year with your feelings.

I'm sorting the suspension first, going to order some Gaz Gold Pros, will see how the car is after those and then start the quest for more power! :D

Mine cost £1500. This month I've bought a set of Rota Zero Plus and Meister-R Zeta-S coilovers. Next month is a respray. Then it's new roof time. But, it's an itch I need to scratch :)

You're not joking ...

Total Consumables &Maintenance: £1,261.23
Total Upgrades: £4,127.79
Spent on car: £5,389.02
Cost of car: £1,650.00
Total spent: £7,039.02

FWIW, that's in 10 months of ownership, and a quest for a reliable 280-300 bhp. It's certainly not cheap!

I certainly don't have any problems handling it.. It's not THAT fast anyway and it's only got 165bhp. I love driving it and I love 'provoking' it. My main reason for selling was just 'moving on' and saving a bit of money.. Like Firestar said, half the fun can be the upgrade path and once this is done and you've had your enjoyment out of driving it, there's no point keeping it if you don't want to.

But I haven't decided really, yet.. :p
