MX-5 Project log thread

How did you depressurise the system? Remove fuel pump fuse and run untill it stalls?

I have a switch wired to the fuel pump relay so I just flicked it and it stalled :) Removed the petrol cap filler before pulling off the hoses too

Howard are you a nutzer or OC member?
I browse the forums but I'm not what you'd call an active member tbh :)

Was yours behind a plastic cover to start with as well? I had a pig of a time trying to get those trim buttons out without damaging them  Especially the top ones in awkward positions!

Yep, was behind a plastic cover. I read that those are a bugger to get off, which is amusing, cos it took me about 5 seconds ;)

You have an mx5? I'm a nutzer by the way.

Howard,

Looking good there, I need to sort rust out on the kick plates too, may have a chat with you about it.

MSN's in my profile if you want it :)

I've only skimmed the thread so excuse me if this has come up already. I've just been trying to remember what little jobs I've done with my car - have you changed the gear stick upper and lower shift boots yet? And changed the turret oil? I did this on mine and found the rubber was totally shot and it made a very positive difference to the gear change.

Not done this yet, read about it though! Might look into it, although I can't see how my gearchange can improve much, it's very precise lol :)

This morning I fitted some front and rear chassis/subframe bracing bars.

Early mk1s weren't braced as well as later ones, and these are meant to make things a fair bit more rigid.

The braces - front top, rear bottom

Mounting the front one - Getting the bolts in is a lot more fiddly, as you need to "guide" them down behind the wishbone mount, but there's a bigger hole underneath that you can poke your finger through and guide the bolt. I then used some twist-tie to keep the washer and bolt in place whilst I placed the bar onto the bolts and tightened the nuts.

And the front finished article also

Has it helped? Yes, a lot. The body doesn't feel quite as jittery going over rougher surfaces now, and as a consequence feels a fair bit more planted. Turn-in seems sharper, also.

An inexpensive and simple bolt on modification, but it has made a decent difference!

Roll on new suspension

Tut tut, you didn't do the bolts the other way round on the front like I did. That way I don't have the bolts sticking down under the car. Plus it looks like you have fitted the bar upside down. :p Go do it again, I fitted it the other way round with the box section upwards, will give you more ground clearance.

I followed the instructions

Thanks Kitchster, that looks good, will add it to the list :)

had a quick look at why there was a loud crackling noise when listening to the stereo at an adequate volume on the motorway..

Ahh, that'll be why then!

Poor little 20 year old speakers have had it :(

Pair of cheap 6" speakers will do, I think

I went for a ride in DrDee's 1.8 mk2 and it didn't feel a great deal faster. Probably due to the increased weight though. mk2s are cool though, refined yet sharp handling :)

Janesy, it's stock AFAIK :p

Firestar, both sets of instructions said to mount it that way up, I just followed them  :o can't see it makes a great deal of difference either way, it's not the lowest point of the car IIRC

Nah I have my Accord for daily slogging, the MX-5 is my fun car only, so I probably do about 50 miles on the average weekend, sometimes more, sometimes not at all if the weather's crap :)
