mx-5 vs S2k

why do people feel they need to thrash a vtec engine everywhere to make any progress?
the 2.0 is more than drivable under 6k, you really need to drive both.

I'd go S2K, but only becasue I fear the VTEC Gods will throw lightning bolts at me if I buy a non-VTEC vehicle in the future. That and I apprecaite the VTEC engine and its traits.

I also prefer the S2K on sounds and looks. Interior is a bit nicer in my opinion too. If it was a question of purely of £££ I'd go for the MX5 simply becasue they are getting older and finding a decent one may not become easy in the future so it would be great to sample it's legend while I could. It's also a nice little platform to tune and learn about tuning if that's your thing.

Driving wise the rev 1 S2K will be more of a challenge as they are quite hardcore by all accounts and would be more rewarding to master, however the MX5 will be easier to chuck about out of the box.

I've got plenty of pics of the MX-5 euphonic in gunmetal if it helps

Lovely :)

My only issue with the gunmetal is that the misses has literally just bought this:

and we'd look like a right pair with his and hers Mazdas..... (and no comment about whose wearing the trousers!)

Im going to get flamed for this and im sure people disagree but for me its a simple simple no brainer. S2000 everytime, no it didnt float my boat but i would far prefer one over a MX5. Also the MX5 isnt very "male" but i suppose that does not matter !

S2000 Sam :) you have had a MX5 so be good to try something diffrent ...

A turbo Mx5 is not going to be faster than a S2000 anyway

Depends on the power yielded by the turbo conversion.

S2000 has a power to weight of 186hp/tonne.

A stock engined turbo MX5 putting out 200hp(pretty normal for a basic turbo conversion) would have a power to weight of ~200hp/tonne, and therefore be faster. Not massively faster but faster.

A properly built MX5 Turbo with forged pistons and rods, more turbo friendly cams and say a GT28R turbo could comfortably run 250hp and be *miles* faster than an S2000.

Is the stock engine strong enough to put out that kind of power? You'd at least need to change the headgasket surely? 250hp is going to be around the 1bar area boost wise, maybe more. Depends on the turbo though.

For a 1.8 Mk1 / Mk2 unit 260bhp is about the limit much after than you risk things giving up, water injection or a really good charge cooler is needed mind but i know several people who run 230 - 240bhp on stock internal engines with simply a turbo / intercooler / exhaust / intake and piggyback ecu mods.
