mx-5 vs S2k

I've seen a couple of turbo mx5 vs s2ks on the, erm, track and tbh theres not much in it...
Obviously its not stock vs stock or fettled vs fettled but as pointed out it works out to pretty much the same money, and the 5 would be considerably newer & lower mileage.

FF i'm sure you've told me before but how much did your setup work out to in the end? What sort of mpg did you end up getting as well?

the other consideration is that a S comes with all the power out the box, and while i'll enjoy messing with the 5 it does come with its own complications (time off the road, servicing etc...)

Whats the resale of a turbo MX5 value like? Much more than stock one or not? Cos thats what you have to bear in mind, purchase and setup costs may be similar for a stock S2k and turbot MX5 but when you sell it means one may have actually cost a lot more.

Your right Jonny, when modifying car you will generally never recoup what you spend, but really it depends whether resale is what matters to you or the enjoyment of planning the project and seeing it through to fruition.

I know speaking for myself ultimate resale value had little impact on the amounts spent on my project cars.

Turbo MX5 resale values vs what you spend to sort one out is rubbish!

yup, they really don't sell too well turbo'd up, but the plan is to keep it long term so not too much of a worry... although i'm keeping my eyes peeled for a lowish mileage turbo'd 5 on the off chance...

(and no, i'm not getting this one, looks very nice but that little bit dodgey!)

S2 F T W!

Agreed! Loving the S2000 in red! Not usually a colour I go for but it really suits the car.

The internals are all good for 250 and were also used in the turbo 323f. It's a great engine for tuning and responds really well to an turbo or SC.

But then again so does the s2000 :D.

IIRC the block was compression ratios in the 5 are diff to the Turbo 323.

Yeah, there are differences to the 323 block sorry, it was just similarly designed and similar internals. But there was originally 2 plans to produce a turbo'd mx5 and also a v6. Hence why the engine bay is ripe for v8 conversions!

In the end Mazda released some special editions with Turbos in Japan (rare!!) and commissioned other companies like BRG to create turbo'd 5s.

I have a Mk2.5 1.8 in Racing Green and its a proper giggle on any non-motorway road. In terms of smiles per £ I would rate it above the S2000. It doesn't look as good to some, doesn't have an electric roof, but drives like it is actually on rails. Put a decent back box and a K&N Typhoon on it and it sounds like a Spitfire (The flying one, not the car :) ) and will give you many many hours and days of cheap, fun, roof down motoring.

Marf - I spent just under £3k for all the work and was running about 7psi IIRC. My MPG was erm.. I honestly can't remember, I managed to get between 250-300 miles per brimmed tank on long motorway runs, but I couldn't help driving it like a loon most of the time, so often that dropped significantly!

I sold it for the same price I bought it (sold it privately to an enthusiast) so the hit wasn't too bad. :)
