MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

Do you not need a full ecu swap with a vvt engine? I know I couldn't get a megasquirt 2 to run mine as only the MS3 allows vvt control?

As said, you can run it on a mk1 ecu but you won't have the VVT working. For that you need either a MS3 ecu, or a VVT tuner from diyautotune. My good mate has transplanted one into his mk1 and it's a good upgrade from the still strong 1.8 he removed.

If any of you guys are up north and fancy joining us on track, me; my brother; and our mate have organised a couple of mx5 (Nutz) exclusive trackdays at Teesside Autodrome for later on this year (May and September). We organised 2 days there last year and they went down great. Days are as follows: max of 25 cars in total (15 on track at any one time), open pit, and only £75.

Details can be found here and here :)

Just put a Larini singe exit exhaust on my Mk1. Sounds absolutely lovely, not at all loud but a perfect tone when giving it beans.

Had some luck on Cheltenham this week to treating myself to a cone filter for the Arctic, thoughts on the K&N Filtercharger kit, not sure I can afford to splash out on the Typhoon.

I wouldn't have thought there's much difference in gains.

Mine had a eBay special job when I bought it and I'm about to buy a standard airbox as the induction roar is quite frankly irritating most of the time.

Mine started leaking the coolant. It was still ok to drive the 8 miles to work and back for a couple of days if i filled the radiator before hand.

Then dropped in to the garage to get them to chuck a new hose on, but while he was poking his finger in to see which hose it was the corroded fitting on the engine block snapped off under the pressure and they didn't have a new one there.

Loaner car and pick it up after my long weekend in Amsterdam then......

Gains wise, I'm no fool in that respect, I know there will be little to no hp gains, maybe a slightly better throttle response and a nicer tone to it,mid like to try and get it sounding more like a classic sports car, not some halfords corsa, I'm hoping this will give a nicer tone, just something I've fancied doing and wanted to do on my Civic for a while but with it being the EP2 it didn't have many mods available as most were done for the Type-R.

TLDR: I know it won't add power, but fancy a bit more noise, but good noise!

I have to admit I do enjoy the way it sounds when I'm giving it some stick. Its just the other 75% of time driving around town it gets tiresome everytime it barks when your accelating up a slightly incline

Water pump inlet pipe? Really common problem as they decided to use a steel hose tail in a cast aluminium piece. I spent about 6 weeks driving mine with a weep just regularly topping it up before getting time to replace it

I guess it also depends which it is, this one is meant to be less intrusive, and louder at 3-4k rpm and under harder acceleration, being a K&N might help with the subtlety when needed more than a more generic one you said you had fitted,

Frozennova, yep, and despite AK having a yard full of breakers they've all either sold the ones they've managed to get off because people always need decent ones or snapped more than a few trying!

Mine was more than a minor leak but just not drivable after the finger prodding incident!

I didn't bother messing around and bought a brand new one from MX5Parts,it even came with the Mazda dealer sticker on the bag.

Mine more or less disintegrated when I touched it.

I'm assuming the previous owner sold it because of it loosing coolant, they only had it a few months

After selling my previous MX-5 nearly 3 years ago as my mileage went up and needed something more suitable I've gone and bought another one!

It's a 2004 1.8i Sport (Bilstein shocks, LSD, 6 speed etc) took me about 2 months of looking to find a decent one that wasn't full of rot. It's a 2 owner car, 45k miles, and is in great condition. Sills and arches are totally clean and original, covered in loads of underseal, and front chassis arms are clean and rust free.

The rest of it is how you'd expect it, plastics inside are scratched up a bit but it's an early 2000 jap car with associated awful plastics.

It's a great little car, and after a couple of miles I remembered why I loved my old one so much.

Already got an MX-5 Parts/IL Motorsport centre section and rear box on, when I had it done I had a good look underneath and it's remarkably clean

Good stuff :) think I'm going to be in the middle position again. Doing too many miles on the mx5 and putting too many miles on my wife a car (with more seats) so will be chopping mine in again soon :(

Scarey how much it's dropped in three years but was to be expected i guess.

Where is the best place to get some black front quarter window edges? On the Arctic they are chrome which is nice, but I'd like to swap the wheels out for something in black or maybe a metallic bronze look, but would really need black borders on the front quarter window or there will be way too many different colours going on.

might be worth asking on the owners club of mx5nutz - sure someone would be willing to swap them for standard (probably with some cash your way) - people seem to go crazy for chrome bits.

That really gives me hope, i quite fancy one of these fairly soon as a weekend/trackday car to tinker with but it's just finding one that's not full of rot.

I'd probably want to be keeping them for now, might check a few scrappies next few weeks when I'm off work!

Are they annoying to change out or not too bad?

Strangely enough this one was from an auction, was taken in part ex by Perrys.

They are out there, just have to look closely. I saw one that was advertised as "rust free" only to ask for close up photos of the rear arches to see one had a hole in it!

I was very lucky with this one, as it has been thoroughly under sealed at some (early) point of it's life
