MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

@gobbo how much did you pay if you don't mind sharing?

BTW with low budget would mk1 be out of the question due to rust? I imagine good condition ones are pretty rare? I do like mk2 though!

I'd probably want to be keeping them for now, might check a few scrappies next few weeks when I'm off work!

Are they annoying to change out or not too bad?

Fairly simple job.

Its been a while since I replaced one but door card off, door glass out, remove window bar then pop the quarter out

After all fees had been paid I was left with change from £3k

I'm after a bit of advice. I've got a 2008 1.8 MX-5 with aircon that I bought from my Dad a couple of years ago.

MX-5 by Greg Kingston, on Flickr

He bought it as a retirement present but unfortunately couldn't drive it much soon after due to a bad hip and subsequent botched hip replacement. I've driven it probably four or five times in the last two years - I thought it would make a great fun summer car, and I do love the idea of it, but the reality is that whenever there's good weather I'd rather be on my motorbike instead. Last year we drove it twice. The lack of driving has meant that it has just under 4,000 miles on the clock. It is garaged, serviced annually and, as you'd expect, is pretty much as it came out of the showroom, new battery aside.

I flirted with selling it last year but couldn't bring myself to do it. This year however I've come to the uncomfortable conclusion that it just isn't going to get driven and will just sit around accumulating 500 miles and a couple of outings a year, and it isn't worth keeping for that alone.

My question to you experienced MX-5 owners: is it worth selling now, given that the value from searching online seems to be around £6,000, or has it reached a bottom where, given its condition, it might actually start appreciating in value and therefore be worth holding on to?

Nothing's been changed since new aside from the battery.

Does anyone know the best common spec for the NB is? By common I mean not some rare import or low volume production.

Is it the Sport? I want all the fancies like heated leather seats but I also want the ABS and LSD. Any ideas?

I've got the the Mk2.5 sport with Variable valve timing on 1839cc engine (S VT model). That comes with LSD and heated seats, I'd expect to be paying around 2.5K for a decent one and as others have said check the sills and chasis rails ;)

Cheers buddy. Should I not regard millage, just check for quality and advice history?

I doubt the mk3 prices have bottomed out yet. The mk4 will drive the prices down when it comes out and people trade up to the newer model.

I'd sell now as its just moving into the nicer weather and the price is at its highest, you can charge a premium over cars of the same age with higher miles

You'd have to hold on to it for about another 25 years for the price to increase significantly due to its low mileage.

Morguk - Where abouts are you?

Time has come for my 2003 S-VT to be moved on. I've a job that involves a 70mile round trip each day and petrol was hitting me. As such i've stolen the wifes car and she wants something thats not my Mazda!

Engines are cheap, a few hundred at most though vvt are rarer.

Severe rot would be a bigger money pit in my opinion.

I bought my 2.5 sport on 118k but the garage I bought it from did a full restoration on any rotten bits but I knew I was supercharging it anyway so expected drivetrain upgrades and possible engine tweaks so wasn't so bothered about the engine as long as the body wasnt going to rot away around the shiny new parts!

I also own a Mk2.5 S VT and yes I would agree you need to watch for rust given that I spent over £1500 having mine repaired :(

I would disagree that you can get a good one for 2.5k though if you are after a sport. I would be spending more like 3.5k on examples like these.

Fair enough - I only mentioned that price as it's what I paid for mine with one previous owner and full mazda service history about 18 months ago. Though I do admit I haven't kept upto date with the price fluctuations on these cars. :o

On the verge of settings fire to mine.

All I seem to be doing is chasing bloody coolant leaks. Fix one and it sprind another leak somewhere else

Edit: Another one found and more hoses ordered.

This time its the hose that runs from the rear of the engine to the middle of the Inlet manifold underneath. Ordered the last few hoses other than the top and bottom rad hose that I havent already replaced. Hopefully I'll now have a car that doesnt consume coolant faster than fuel

I had a mk1 that did this. Ended up doing nearly all the hoses, a blank nipple on the inlet, radiator, pump, thermostat, housing. Everything except heater matrix before it stopped!

Not wanting to depress you any further :p

Kind Regards

Alec

Thanks for that, appreciated. I think I'll advertise over Easter and hope the weather is good!
