MX5 Owners in here....bring your curling tongs

I think if I needed something just to tootle around in, that would be ideal, I like the hardtop version, and the MK3 looks quite timeless IMO.. I think they are fantastic VFM propositions.

No love for the mk4's in this thread - still too new ?
Drove one a few weeks back and admittedly it was the first mx-5 I've ever driven but it had me sold! Such a fun car to drive. Was the RF sport nav version and intend on purchasing within the next 6 months

Anyone performed a DIY Double Din unit install on their MX5?

How easy was it?

I'm not mega Confident but would give it a bash if I can...

The other week I managed to borrow an endoscope so had a quick look inside the sills and front chassis rails of my imported mk2. Still need to remove some trim and get in from other areas to give a more through check but so far I'm really pleased:

I have half a dozen tins of Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 cavity wax so all the box sections will be getting filled after I've inspected them all properly

Cool ... I've got mine booked in for a full DINITROL treatment by JR classics :)

Nice one, perfect base to start from and with the protection you're planning it should stay solid for a long time to come.

As for the mk4, I've just signed up for an open day at Mazda UK via the owners club so I should get a chance to take one for a spin. That said, the last time I sat in a mk3 I couldn't really fit my legs in it so hopefully the mk4 is a bit more accommodating :p TBH though I'll be more interested in the Mazda 3 in terms of a future purchase :o

:o I've had it for almost 5yrs, was going do the box sections when I undersealed underneath and the arches not long after buying it but didn't get round to it.

It's going up for sale next month so trying to finish off all the outstanding jobs I wanted done on it.

Wow :o I'd try that on mine, but I fear id snag the camera on some rust and get it stuck :p

:D

To be fair the car was only imported in 2010 and the importer brought it over for his girlfriend, who I bought it off. Since I've had it it's been garaged every winter and only gets used as a toy.

Finally finished restoring these wheels after doing it on and off over several months. Anyone who knows these wheels knows that they are a total flake/corrode-fest.

Quite pleased with the result especially given that my interest waned towards the end:

This is what they used to look like - these are the other set I have which are actually in better condition than the ones above were:

Given I'm back in the UK for the time being, I'm off to view this on saturday. Seems to be pretty solid, just put 2 new rears on as well. Any thoughts?

Back in the UK AND looking at MX5's - extra sexy

Looks grand - you obviously know your way around these and there's not much different on the mk2.5's - obviously don't take his word for it on the rust/sills/chassis rails front, again obviously check the roof. Definitely see the paperwork for the clutch change - early NBFL's had clutch judder issues - as mine has :( Get the car warm and reverse up a slope slowly and you'll know.

Remember, only the sexiest boys drive silver NBFL's.

Definitely, I'll be taking a torch and a bottle of water, to check the chassis and roof respectively. Obviously I know that it may have niggles, however it's pretty tidy considering. Fingers crossed its as described.

Mine's not quite the full 'pack' as I have a non-BBR exhaust (my manifold is Racing Beat and the rest is from Goodwin Racing, the full pack would have these parts from BBR as well) but I have the throttle body setup (with airbox), cams, and remap from BBR. My car also has supertech valve springs and retainers just as a bit of insurance for high revs (stock NC1 valve springs aren't as stiff as the facelift cars).

Drives really nicely but still a very typica naturally aspirated power delivery, it needs revs, over 5.5k to the redline though it proper goes.

It sounds much better with the throttle bodies than the factory car (horrible plastic intake manifold means basically no induction noise of note on the NC), but the airbox setup I have does a big job of muffling the sound of it. It sounds 'good' rather than amazing which is what people expect from ITBs. A custom long arm intake would probably give a properly loud induction noise but theres nothing off the shelf that would either fit or cost silly money. The engine bay also looks crap with the factory airbox removed as well, the ECU tray and wiring looks so ugly. I have other plans longer term anyway (rotrex).

Here's the engine bay now:

Here's the dyno plot, as above it makes 221bhp, the 228bhp figure was done with open trumpets (no airbox), a speed density tune, and bonnet open. Bonnet shut and with a motorsport style sausage filter, you'd probably get a lot less as you'd be sucking in warm air.
