My Citizenship Journey

I laugh because natural citizens need not take oaths. It is funny that by default they are assumed to not require any oath but foreigners who obviously don't get that same level of trust require some words to be said and that is all that's needed.

People should not need oaths to uphold those values. If people hold the values above a few words, then the oath itself means nothing, if not then they hold their own words more important than what they represent.

Oaths are by their nature funny. You are required to take one to show loyalty and to be trusted, yet it costs no one anything to take one.

Natural citizens do need to take the oath at various times, for example when joining the military or becoming a judge.

But I would have thought the reason non-natural citizens have to take the oath is obvious. A British person is usually going to have a natural loyalty to their nation, because that is where their roots, family and friends are from. Someone from say Germany is not naturally going to be loyal to the UK, so asking them to take an oath is a way of formalising a bond to the nation. And if they were then to betray us, they have broken their personal agreement with us.

Yes, it costs nothing to say the words and unscrupulous and immoral people can discard their oath willy-nilly. But to decent and honest people, it means something to take an oath.

That doesn't work in my circumstances. I was born in the UK, I was educated in the UK, I've worked in the UK all my life, I'm a sworn constable and I volunteer my time across the county. I have as much natural loyalty as anyone who was born as a citizen.

I only visited Germany for the first time around 4 years ago, and feel a connection with the UK much more than Germany although it does feel part of my heritage. I think the idea that you're loyal to only one nation is a bit outdated. Many people are dual nationals.

I wasn't discussing your personal circumstances, but the reason why the oath is taken.

I don't agree that you can truly be loyal to two nations. It may be that your loyalty is never tested, but if those two nations came into conflict, you'd have to make a choice.

I don't approve of dual nationality.

From Rhyll by any chance?

I knew you didn't approve of me :(

I'll get over it though as I love having multiple nationality! :D

To err is human. I forgive you.

Good thing i have three passports then.
Also, how has anyone who has ever known one nation can say with any educated guess that people cant be loyal to more than one?

Come again? If I am deciphering your pigeon English correctly: History.

You understood me just fine until you found out i have several passports :D

So what in history is preventing me from being loyal to my different countries?

Or what is making me disloyal?

I'll tell you what proves me right: examples

(see i can do it too ;))

I understood you when your sentences made sense, the fact you've multiple passports has no bearing on my comprehension.

And I don't assume you will be disloyal, I assume that with split loyalties you're more likely to be disloyal. Historically people have betrayed their host nations when presented with those same choices.

Also worth noting I am hardly alone in my scorn of dual citizenship. The US dislikes it too, which is why if you want to become a US citizen you must renounce your previous nationality.

Sounds like your views are outdated. At what point will i be presented with a choice between my countries?

Well it sounds like you understood me originally after all, you just wanted to tell me that you didn't.

Vasectomy

Stops 'em half breeds!

(if i hadn't of said it as a joke i am sure certain people would have said it in seriousness!)

Ah yes, the old $CURRENT_YEAR argument.

I've already addressed that. You may never have to choose between them. But equally, even if the chance is trivial, why should the British state take that risk? Your having foreign nationalities doesn't benefit the UK in any way.

I don't accept the idea is outdated, I expect there are very few people (as a % of the national population) in your position.

My daughter was born in Germany to English parents, but has an English BC and is English. I don't even know if we could have claimed dual-nationality for her as it never occurred to us.

I haven't read your thread for a while; I hope the process is going well for you.
