My E28 528i

I'm fairly certain that there are many more people on here who are completely ambivalent about E39s than there are who utterly adore them. Though I'll admit that the sheer amount of bandwidth used to accuse Fox et al of being focused solely on E39s and Mondeos could conceivably indicate otherwise....

Well I've had attempts by such people to convince me that spending 10k on an E39 is better than spending 15k on an E60 so the bandwidth you mention being used/wasted isn't exactly uncalled for!

You had those attempts once, in a thread entitled 'Should I buy this car'. Since you bought it the only negative comments you've had is 'The E60 looks way better as a Sport'. That doesnt mean LOL shoulda got an E39, it means LOL get saving up for those Sport bumpers :p

You specifically ASKED whether you should get the E60, or get an E39 Sport. And my advice to you was, IIRC, that the E60 offered excellent value and due to the price it was offered to you at made a better buy.

JRS is right. Until I posted that thread about an M5 the other day months had past since the last E39 thread. I rarely ever post about them, I rarely recommend them to people, yet every day someone else accuses me of posting about them constantly.

It was the same with the Mondeo. It's bizarre but a fact of life in OcUK Motors.

Wrong. Thread is here. I was originally on the lookout for either a 530d sport or some form of E270; that quickly turned into an E39 530D vs. E60 530D when I was given an offer I couldn't refuse. You didn't say one positive thing about the E60 at the time. I'm not just bringing this up now after re-posting that thread, I remember taking your advice to heart since you spoke with an educated opinion and I went round trying to convince myself that an E39 was the better choice.
Granted, if I didn't get the E60 at such ridiculously cheap money (fyi after 8 months and 10,000 miles I could still sell it on at a profit) I would have went for an E39 at the bat of an eyelid. No denying it's a fine example of a car.
Anyhow, it's in the past! Not wanting to break any bones here when all has ended up rosy, and more importantly, I'm completely off topic :p

I did make it abundantly clear it was only my opinion....

At the end of the day though, its entirely up to you.

etc..

I don't really see anything in that thread which is 'bad' - it's a thread full of peoples opinions, everyone was polite and I put a lot of time into the replies I offered you. You started off asking about an E39 so, obviously, thats the way my advice was tailored - towards someone who wanted to buy an E39 but wondered whether the cheap end of the E60 market was worth looking into.

You did manage to get an exceptional deal from a family member which removed the ever-present risk of buying from the bottom of the barrel of a particular BMW market, though.

I still to this day maintain that deciding you wanted a diesel without even driving the petrol when you only do 12k a year was particularly daft, though, and I still don't personally feel the styling of the SE 'works' - the former is simply good maths, the latter is entirely subjective.

Now save up for Sport bumpers!

Well it amounts to 15k a year as some conditions have changed, but anyway back then it wasn't a matter of diesel vs. petrol as any other E60 of even ****-poor spec, petrol or otherwise, wouldn't have been within £5k of the price I got mine at. If the car I bought was an E60 530i at that price and of the same spec I'd still have went for it. Diesel vs. petro didn't figure.
Like you I had myself convinced that the SE was ugly. But that evening when I went up the tree-lined driveway with this car at the end of the lane - as soon as I thought a car like that could be mine, the most recent model, my opinion on it completely changed :) Really, owning one does change things.

GET IT DONE.

Gaaahh ok you've made me take a look around at least but it's around £500 or more and it wouldn't look right unless I changed the wheels as well
It's either bumpers or a remap :o

In fact no I'm doing nothing. It will give me something to look forward to in the purchase of a 540d sport in 2010 :p

540d Sport? Won't happen in the UK at least. Certainly not in 2 years.

Bumpers..

I mean the new model which arrives in maybe 2010(possibly?) then I get a 1-year or 1.5-year old one.
No bumpers without wheels. And wheels = ££ :(

It might just be me being a contrary twit, but am I alone in thinking that this E28 is far, far, far more desirable than any E39 or E60 5-Series?
They're both desirable in different ways imho.

I'd take an e39 over an e28 any day of the week as a daily driver. e28 over e39 as something to lavish love and attention over and only take out at the weekends :)

I dont know whats come over me of late, but i am really liking all of these old classics. Was watching Life on Mars the other day, what is the car they drive in that?

Edit yup, a 1974 Ford 'tina.

Holy hell. Fox agrees with me. Special moment!

Apologies for the +4 day bumpage, but something that momentous deserves a bump. Plus I've not gone near the internet since I last posted in this thread.

And I repeat - there are many more people on here who are completely ambivalent or apathetic about the BMW E39 family than there are who preach "E39 uber alles!". I'm honestly sure if anyone here is quite that in love with the E39, but Fox quite obviously isn't....despite what is posted in reference to him.

Crap, defending Fox again. This is not good, guys. If I keep this up then people will think that I actually agree with the guy on everything.
