My first attempt at building a pc... does it look ok ?

Well idk, my brothers AMD X4 idles at 24*C idle but the ATI card seems about right, 50*C idle, Realtemp and Prime95 blend test will torture your cpu just make sure you babysit the temps and switch off at around 75-80

I was pretty sure the temperature limit on the amd processors was 60. This would make 70 a very bad temperature to hit, and 65 a bad one to be at 24/7. I can't confirm this with amd as I cant seem to find an equivalent to intels processor spec finder

Temps going down when the side comes off means airflow is bad. Have you put a front fan on yet?

I'd be properly worried about that much heat in the system.

well it only hits 60+ when i do that prime 95 test, when i play crysis maxed out with 8xaa the cpu only hits around 51

the gpu never seems to go above 60 even when playing crysis

not had a chance to put a front fan in yet, still waiting for more opinions on whether it's worth getting a new case or not. if people think the temps are managable (they will probably go down as well once i cable manage and put a front fan in) then i'll stick with this case.

Someone on another forum is saying that my titan fenrir cooler isn't good enough, which is odd as it's the cooler which overlockers included in the bundle, so i would have thought it would do the job just fine ?

im getting a new case btw, the coolmaster cm-690 which someone posted here. not really certain if thats going to bring down temps a lot though ?

It will for these reasons:

upto 7 120mm fans
cable management.

though i don't think you'll be able to use the side ones as you have a fenrir.

Are you tightening the bolts on the fenrir as hard as you can?

might be worth just reapplying compound on the fenrir/cpu, use more than normal as you have to cover the gaps in the heatpipe of the heatsink.

I used almost double the normal amount on mine.

Firmly, not as hard as you can or you will break something. The fenrir is just fine for this, overclocked means it'll be inclined to run hotter. Using enough paste to fill the gaps between the heatsinks is good advice.

Ok. So i just got the new case delivered (the cm-690). was taking everything out of old case and figured i may as well see what the thermal paste situation was like. so iv taken 2 pics of the cpu and heatsink in the hope some of you can tell me if i applied too much or too little paste. here are the pics...

WAY too much m8.
You just want a very very thin layer.
Best method I find is to put a drop in the center of the CPU no bigger than a pea and then spread it with your finger in clingfilm.

ok cool, pretty sure thats all i put on last time though, maybe i put a little extra on for good measure lol

also, you have the CM-690... how on earth do you remove the front panel ? trying to put my dvd drive in but can't for the life of me work out how to get the panel off. in the manual it says to just pull it up but it feels like i'll break something if i do that.

sorry one more question

The CM690 is designed for the power supply to go in the bottom. is it ok if the power supplies fan is at facing downwards into the base of the case ? surely that will cause overheating problems (although there are some ventilation holes in the bottom where the fan would face) but if the case is sitting on the ground how is any air going to get under there ?

do i need to flip it round so the psu's fan is facing upwards ?

The power supply in the 690 is disigned to fit fand down so it pulls cool air in for the bottom.
The is actualy lifed about half an inch off the ground by those HUGE rubber feet it has :D
As for removing the front pannel im pretty sure you just pull it free, there may be some clips inside the case though I cant check as im at work atm.

cheers, managed to get front panel off by giving it a massive tug

good to know about the power supply

one other question with regards to to all 3 fans in the case...

Do they need to be plugged into the mother board AND the power supply or just one or the other ? In the old case i had i simply connected the one fan to the motherboard and that was it, but the connector leads on these fans all have power supply connectors as well. Also do the fans have to be connected to specific fan inputs on the mobo ?

for example on my mobo i have the following (excluding the cpu fan connector)

a 4 pin connector called "SYS FAN 1"

a 3 pin connector called "Panel SYS FAN 2"

a 3 pin connector called "PWR Fan"

Now im a bit confused as all the connectors coming out of all three fans are 3 pin but i only have two 3 pin inputs on the motherboard. can i just plug a 3 pin lead into a 4 pin input ? or do i not need to plug the fans into the mobo at all, instead just connect then to the PSU ?

Sorry for so many questions, you all must be getting pretty tired of dealing with such a noob lol

Plug them all into the Power Supply mate.
Far less messy and you can hide them behind the back pannel then.

sweet, talking of messy... iv been trying to replicate how you have your cable management setup. how on earth did you get your main mobo connector cable to wrap round from the back and get the side panel to fit on ? iv managed to get it through the little hold at the bottom (where you have threaded through all your leads) but i can't for the life of me work out how you managed to wrap it round from the back to the front so that you side panel can still fit on ?

wicked, i was sneakily hoping you might take a backshot :D

I literally just tried to replicate your cable management the best that i could, couldn't get it looking as good as yours but i think its an improvement on the mess before. it's still far from perfect though... but will hopefuly improve airflow

only problems i had were the ATX12v cable not being long enough to put round the back so i had to stretch it over the gfx card and connecting the fans was a bit long as the connectors which go to the power supply were quite large.

think im going to order a an extension cable for the ATX12v lead so i can try and weazle it through the back like the other cables. is this the cable id need for that ? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-022-AK

so anyway here is the pic

One thing im a little worried about (and i have no idea if i should be) is that the cables (which are pushed through the little rectangular hole to the right of psu) are all REALLY REALLY tightly squashed together, but then im sure it's the same for your setup as well ? Is it something to worry about or will it be fine ?

It'll be fine m8, mine a fairly tight too. Its not the biggest of holes.
