my first patch panel !

Wish I'd taken some of ours before we had an entire network overhaul. Some cabinets had 4 24 port switches in stuffed full of 2m patch cables. YES - 2 METRES!!! We've now invested in some nice 30cm ones which have tidied things up nicely.

I'll have the task of cabling up 200+ points soon. We've opted for 1u cable management per 48 ports (2x24u 1 patch panels).

What is the standard for colouring scheme if there is one? I've had a google but haven't found much in my quick search.

Any guides to cabling up? I can only recall doing it once or twice in my old job.

Make sure you put 1 patch panel above your switch and one below. It'll keep your cabling neater.

Make up your own colour scheme up IMO. We stick to grey for data, yellow for voice but then have other colours depending on the site to allow for guest data, WiFi APs, DECT radio heads, CCTV POE devices etc.

I almost bought some bright PINK patch leads this week :D

Wish ours was neater. Points aren't labelled/numbered so to patch in a device, we have to guess what cab it comes back too, plug the device in and patch the cable through until the light comes live on the switch.

It'll all be sorted nicely soon, when we get our new building.

Nice work.

yup its bad, in total we've 8-9 42U cabs that i've been re-doing and so far i've filled 2 massive crates full of cables that were too long.

Shows just 3 of the racks after a good few 2hr sessions of untangling! Still a long way to go unfortunately.

:p

No problem making my own up, was just thinking if there was a standard I'd use that!

Welcome to my world! That is proper- you know you've done a good job when you're tripping over 20m UTP cables patching a 42U rack! :D

A couple of years ago I got my lads to spend a weekend tidying our patch panel up. Monday morning all OK, Monday afternoon, half the network goes down- one of the ProCurves partitioned itself. Cue a busy two hours pulling everything and making more of a mess than before. Turns out one of the eedjits in another department had plugged a switch into his UTP port in an effort to get his home laptop on the network, and we reckon for some reason Spanning Tree went mad. Why the Procurve didn't just partition that port instead of a whole chassis is a mystery to this day (and why we don't use any HP/Compaq comms equipment any more!).

Result- two days work (not by me luckily) and a patch panel that was worse than before :(

Sorry for resurecting an old thread - but how much did you guys with Neat Patches pay for them? I've only found one site selling them at over a ton!
Waiting for my normal supplier to get back to me, but I would really like them cheaper than that!

The company I worked at before already had them in, I know they bought them from the USA though as it worked out much cheaper even with shipping thanks to the near 2:1 exchange rates we had.
