At last a proper update that actually involves work done on the car!

Thats what flap disks were invented for ;)

Tonights update

Welds dressed and covered in a *very* good coat of primer to ensure it ran into the seams for protection. All this will be covered in seam sealer once everything is rubbed down.

Then I started on the cambelt on the Leon engine

Marked the top and bottom timing marks

Tensioner unbolted, old belt and water pump removed

New tensioner, tensioner pulley, water pump and belt fitted

Lower and middle belt covers fitted

Top plastic cover fitted, needs a good clean and possibly a coat of paint

Confidence in welding doesn't take that long to build up in all honesty, well for simple welds. Kit however is an issue, i'd love a welder, but can't justify the cost for the amount of times i'd need it.
 
That is going to one STRONG golf. Work looks good, keep it up. And please, when you're finished, dont put on some cak back lights and ruin the whole project.

What is the final colour going to be?
 
i dont know what id need to be honest... looking at mig welders in machine mart and im always after bits that could be fabricated in metal so easily if i could weld.

LMAO You have my permission to burn me inside the golf if you see any non standard bits on the outside :D

Final colour is going to be Ford Radiant Red. Exterior has been resparyed just the engine bay to do now.

A friend of mine is doing a welding evening course at a local college, he's learnt loads. Should give you the confidence to start and know what you need.

Wheels will fill the arches due to the widetrack setup. Tyres wont be streched, I'm more interested in how it goes compared to how it looks :)

Fair play, i'm all about that too, just seen a fair few golfs with this look recently and it does them justice, penski would be proud!

Judging by the quality of the work so far, it's gonna go very well
 
Just read through this (mostly looking at pics :p), brilliant work, looks like it's going to be a damn fun ride when you complete it.

Reminds me of when I had to do an engine change...although mine was 'cause I blew the head and well, a warped head just doesn't run all that well. I love and hated doing that, some things were such a pain but so rewarding once done.

I have to admit, my car is/was (at uni now so the car is sitting back home being unloved...but abused by my older brother :mad:) not a fast or attempting to be fast car...Peugeot 306 XLd...but it provided loads of learning experience both in car control and in working on them.

Reading this just makes me want to go back home and fic it back up to being a decent car again...or persuade my brother to part with his 205 1.99 GTi if I rebuild the engine (his shafted it'self and he stripped the engine and got it rebored etc. and hasn't rebuilt it).

I hope it goes well mate, it's always so rewarding finishing a project like a car. :)

you cant really rebore a 1.9 gti. its a linered block and pretty near on impossible to increase the displacement, it already uses the larger stroke crank aswell.
you just change the liners and pistons for new ones but this will still keep it 1.9 (83mm borex88mm stroke)

Can I ask for a "first time start up" video? Dunno why, but seeing that is quite warming - drexels face was lit up like a crimbo tree when his rex started after his repair session! It always reminds me of successful engine swaps and its a great feeling when they work!

I actually meant relined/cast the head, the cambelt snapped on him, so it broke a few things :p

Main point is that it's sitting in his garage doing sod all as he keeps working on other things :rolleyes:
