My Light Painting Evolving

I think it's time to re-light this thread (see what I did there) living so far north means that we have very long days during the summer which in turn means not very good light painting conditions. Now we are pushing through August it's getting darker sooner and it's time to go and play :D

So I managed my first trip of the 'new season' last night and it was very enjoyable, still pretty warm out too was about 15-17 degrees on the car and for up here that's flipping good! Unfortunately though the cloud had streamed in and covered teh big moon, still enough light to play with though!

Destination was the Barvas machair, my favorite place! This time I stopped for a wee shoot at an old retro caravan. This actually used to be the village Post-Office at one point... amazing what you can find out and how things were back in the day!

More to come!

Wow these are great, really enjoying them!
Thanks glad you like!

Here's another from the trip, this time the Ghillie Bus on the Machair at the end of the Barvas river as it meets the sea. It comes out every season for the Ghillies to keep watch for salmon poachers.

Well I am slowly getting through some of last weeks night shots, been so busy over the last few days! Had my first 2 photo-shoots the past few days which has been mental and difficult (not my usual thing)

Anyways! Here it is, for some reason over the last few months I have fallen in love with this panoramic ratio... not sure why but it has worked well with a lot of shots i have done over the summer from landscapes to weddings, never had a night shot though :) Works well (I think)

There is some really fantastic work here.
I am not sure if I am just super impressed or a bit sad that I don't think I could manage anything this good!
Are any HDR or is it just how they have come out with this lighting you use?

Incidentally, looking on eBay Germany, there appear to be some used Lenser V24s for sale if anyone is still after one from the first page posts.

Thanks, of course you are capable! I didn't think I was when I started out but it only take a bit of practice and trial and error. All these are one single exposure, no HDR's here, I think it's just the type of lighting and different angles that i have painted the light give that effect :)

Here's a wee recap I posted on Talkphotography for another forumite that could answer questions and help out :)

Most of it was learned by trial and error, but I highly recommend Troy Paiva's recent ebook 'The Lost America Tequnique' as its got loads of advice ad samples in it.

Well to begin with I used the following:
Canon 500D
Sigma 10-20mm (kit lens will work, just not as wide)
Redsnapper rs283 + 528head,
shutter release cable/remote i use chinese cheapos
Yongnuo 467 flash
LED Lenser P5 then upgraded to the P7

Kit now:
Canon 5D1
Sigma 24-70 2.8 (only lens)
Same tripod
Yongnuo 467 as well as a Canon 540ez
Same torches, various orb strings, led glow sticks

And that's about it I think...

But a basic SLR, kit lens, sturdy tripod, cheap remote and bright torch will do. For colours I use quality street wrappers haha, excellent colours. Then setup and experiment with settings, good start is iso400, 2 mins at 5.6 see what's what. If a high ISO test at 15 seconds is spot on reduce your stops to Lower ISO then boost your shutter by that number to get your exposure.

Focus... Set centre point, shine torch on what you want focused, focus there and then switch to manual, even in it means placing your rich beside the object and walk blindly back to camera to get focus... This is where two torches come in handy

And to finish off tonight's post... another of the Ghillie bus on the Machair in Barvas :)

Thank you very much for your reply.
Some helpful and useful information. I have just purchased the eBook to get me started and gain some better understanding.
Need to get some decent light sources too!
Seems something like these are the default for the orbs?

I actually have the same Sigma 24-70 lens (on a 600D). Will need to look into flashguns though as mostly do daytime stuff so never bothered with one.
From what I have briefly read it seems that in general flash is used in manual mode off camera, so i could probably get away with any make and model? it wouldn't need to be specific to my camera -just thinking get something cheap to try out first.

Yea that is basically what I use for the Orbs... differences being my sets are only 10 bulbs (going to order 20/30 bulbs soon) I got mine from china for about £1.50 delivered a set :D Then cut the cable and soldered in some 3 core flex so the wires would be more robust.

Flash-wise I would get one compatible with your camera, reason being you can then actually use it :) I have the YN 467 which has e-ttl so auto metering when on camera which is a great bonus and comes in handy now and again. They are quite cheap and work well, there is a mk2 of it now as well. Or you could just get any manual flash but the YN's ain't going to be that more expensive, I have a Canon film flash a 540ez which is pretty powerful and picked it up pretty cheap too.

OK guys another thread revival! Since posting last due to some circumstances I have changed setup yet again! Now got myself a 600D... so Managed my first night (read hour) out using it haha along with a Samyang 8mm fisheye... Not sure if I like the effect or how much use it would get if it was mine though...

why have you sold your 5D for a 600D?

Well with the 5D/24-70 2.8 worth quite a bit of dosh I couldn't justify it sitting around most of the time. I've only picked it up a hand full of times in the last few months, partly due to the sheer size and weight. So for selling up I have a much more modern body and kit lens for less than the value of the 5D alone. Wish I could justify having it though ;)

Ok again I have let this thread slip away and not have any update in a while so here I go...

These first two are from my Canon 600D, I wasn't best pleased with the results as I knew I had made a mistake selling my 5D, noise was an issue...

Wooooo! by M+M Morrison, on Flickr

So last week I borrowed a mates 5D mk1 which he is looking to sell... lucky me I hope! So getting close to full moon I decided to head on out (no remote for it so I was limited to 30 seconds for any shots I took) so had to be a quick spin for this Orb
