My Log Burner...

I now have an open fire!

I can collect lots of free wood from the back garden and empty land beyond, and I want to start storing some to season. Can I pile it up in my garage? It's cold in there but not damp. I'm reluctant to build a proper log store.

If the wood is damp, then it's better stack outside so the air can dry it.
Then after it's dry there no reason why you can't stockpile it in the garage.

It best to stack the wood a few inches off the ground, & just cover the top of the pile to keep the rain off.

Our effort

Aarrow Ecoburn 9kw, practically heats the whole house. Has been fitted 18 months, possibly one of the best things i have ever purchased. Just had our gas bill for the last three months £28

Do you use it to heat your water? If you use it to heat the whole house do you not have central heating? How often do you use the fire, do you have a daily routine?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm genuinely interested. Would really like a log burner but not sure how practical it would be in the real world, or how fitting it would be in a normal semi detached house in the suburb rather than a nice cottage in the country side.

The most important question is can you get free wood, if you pay for wood then gas is vastly cheaper!

Doesn't it get wet being outside, though? Thanks for your photograph - I could whip something similar up down the back of my garden, I think.

Yes, but nothing serious,as it's only the ends got wet if we had driving rain, quickly dried though.
Use to make many stacks on pallets at bottom of garden, after two or three months drying, it was then moved to the wood shed.

The cover needs to be a few inches wider than the wood pile to allow water run off to clear the logs.
If you had a mild winter, it was easy to build up a stockpile in the wood shed for the following winter.

No I don't have access to free wood, but there is farm not far from me that sells it pretty cheap compared to most places. I'd love a burner for the novelty and aesthetic value rather than being for the primary source of heat for the house. But I'm due a total upgrade on my home central heating and boiler set up so I'm looking into all the options available really.

I am with you there, love our burner and had already installed new boiler - i didn't really consider one that feeds the rads or heats water as like you mine isnt the main heat source.

Having said that its on as often as we can have it at the moment as its a nicer heat and good fun as well as looking great!

My dad has just finished installing a 12kw burner similar to that. He didn't have a chimney though so went the stainless 6" pipe route.
He's hoping it'll heat the whole house to save on gas costs. It'll be many years though before he gets back the £3k investment.

Just got a Firefox 5kw wood burner installed with a flue liner and great flue pull but not much heat in the room even though the flue pipe is getting upto 500c and the stove is roasting. The only issues I can see is the stove is actually in the opening so doesn't protrude out of the builders opening and clearances at the back to wall is about 10mm to the rear wall and 100mm on each side, when it's on feeling the brick work to the sides there are roasting hot so should I maybe invest in some reflective paint? Shall I request the wood burner be moved forward by 5cm? Any help/advice appreciated?

It will sit where the chimney lets it sit really, only way to bring it forward would be to use a rear exit for the stove if it has one - this will bring it forward loads but will likely mean you need a bigger hearth.

Mine is pretty close to the rear wall but plenty of room above and to the sides - 270mm above and 190mm to the sides, about the most we could get from our chimney. You could get an ecofan if you have enough room to push the heat out and into the room??

Our cooker is faulty, who needs one tho....
