Just throwing a different solution to the general consensus in this thread. Shoot me down if you like but...
Hows about go round and explain that you can connect etc, what this could mean and how it could hurt them, and possibly offer secure solutions so it doesn't happen again.
The whole premise of people being stupid / put down because of their lack of knowledge on a subject that has gained so much traction in such a short period of time, is so wrong.
I'm surprised if half the people on here actually understand the sheer amount of data and privacy they are giving away, that is just being sold on.
Educating people shouldn't be frowned upon, especially with the complete lack of any security with IoT devices. Its going to hurt people, a lot of people, especially when all this tech gets even more ingrained with our daily lives.
Make people aware, make people safe.
Dont just **** with them for a cheap laugh that honestly benefits no one.
It starts as playing a song randomly at midnight, then can so quickly and easily turn into scraping the data collected 24/7 and obtaining a lot of personal/private data.
Just posting a different way of looking at this. Honestly the whole outlook on this area needs to change, we need to stay in control and stay alert. This could literally happen to anyone with an echo / dot, but when does a bit of fun turn into something a lot darker? Who decides what is stepping over the line?
Change the device in this story to any other IoT device, a doorbell, a baby monitor, a chip in your arm that conveniently opens the door to your work office. Then some punk comes along and makes it so that device plays a boyzone song 24/7 while distracting you that its also spamming out your entire personal information (be that your bank details, biometric data, whatever.
Then it stops being funny.
