My new car

People going on about BMWs and Fords and how everyone would have told him to get one of those, when they are entirely wrong. :D

If he had come here before buying, what would you have suggested?

Peugeot 106 GTi, Focus 2.0 Zetec (lower group for some reason), Fiesta Zetec-S etc. I think the Focus would be the number one choice though, 3 door Focus Zetec ESP with a decent 2 litre engine and Group 8 insurance.

sod multi-multi quoting

I notice a couple of sensible Fords (not a Mondeo) and a Peugeot...no BMW and none of the sort of thing everyone is trying to argue would have been said.

A Focus at 18 is a more sensible car and they really aren't bad to drive. I've been in Corsas and just thought 'eurgh'. At 18 I had the likes of £500 to spend on a car, and still ended up with a car that was nicer than a Corsa. :p
With 5.5k to spend on a car and insurance I'd get something a bit older with more power and fun...and still have money in the bank.

The smart thing would have been to spend the money on either a 205 or 309 Gti. Pick up a minter for 1k. Faster then the corsa, a lot better around the corners and ten times more fun to drive. Pocket the 3k change plus whatever you saved on insurance then when you hit 20 with 3 years no claims on your belt. The world is your oyster.

Only small problem is with that... he might not actually like a 205 or 309!!!!!! Crazy I know. Probably not really any faster than the corsa in a straight line either btw. Plus those cars are old now and DO require regular work no matter what anyone tells you.

Looks a tidy car, awesome car for 18 and the 1.8 is def pretty pokey. Enjoy!

Thats easy, You've succeeded in finding a worse car than the corsa, infact possibly the worst car in its class.

I'm sure I can top that with my X reg 1.1 Saxo with no power steering :D

I think the OP is a nice enough car, especially for a 1st one. Keep it original, look after it and it should provide plenty of fun for very little cost.

When I was a teenager your first car was always a banger, and usually a 1.4 or less. You didn't mind because its the freedom it brings thats the biggest joy to owning your first car.

You have to taste the rough to appreciate the smooth. The saxo has reminded me of that - whenever I get back in the Focus I'm reminded of just what a great car it is. Seems a lot of people on this forum will go through their lives only ever driving great cars, and strangely that makes me sad.

So when I turn 17 in a few months time, I should intentionally buy a rubbish car? Sorry, but no. :p

Not my cup of tea, but it's just a run of mill supermini, it looks OK, goes OK, and handles OK.. and is OK for an 18 year old..

However, it's defo one of the softer sporty supermini's, but it's controllable, and with a bit of control can hussle along reasonably well..

Listening to some people on here, you would think that you can't enjoy yourself in a car unless it's a class leader in the chassis department.. and that becuase one car understeers more then another car it must be unejoyable.. for some people they will just push a car to it's limits and the fun is controlling it at the limit, not what the absolute limit is..

Each to their own, I'd have suggested a Focus myself, but I do realise that not everyone wants what I want..

Yep, you can suggest alternatives, but personal taste comes into it at the end of the day :) As Swiss tony might say - a car is like a lady, and different things flick different people's switches. :D

It's why I saw a blue Robin Reliant ripping down the road by Old Street a while ago, with a kickin' sound system I might add  Obviously that guy is having a lot of fun, but it wouldn't be my cup of tea.

He asked what we thought. We posted. Would you have rather people pretended they loved it?

No, it's fine to say "I don't like it", or "It's not my cup of tea", but to then qualify that opinion with "I'd rather cut bits of me off then buy one" is quite a deliberately negative thing to say to someone, insinuating it's almost a crime to own such a 'crap' car.. When at the end of the day, it's regarded by the populous and the press as 'ok', it's not the best, it's certainly not the worst, and plenty of people buy them, it's OK..

This is a public forum and people should be civil to each other, not get really trashy with people because they bought a car you don't like..

I dont think anyone has been 'trashy' to the OP, just to the car which is an inanimate object with no feelings.

Some people do get quite emotionally attached to their cars though (I'm not talking about humping the exhaust pipe), so I suppose logically you could assume that being 'trashy' to their car could be taken quite badly, especially if they'd spent a lot of time and/or money on it. Meh

No, insulting his purchase is not going to make him feel very good is it??

I think some people are so desensitised by the trash talk that occurs sometimes on here that they think it's OK to do this all the time, where as they are being quite insulting.. but some people will do anything for attention.

If it bothers you that much why not ignore threads which ask 'What do you think of my car' becuase you know, it might contain people explaining what they think of someones car.

Anyone who asks an internet forum what they think of something must be prepared for all sorts of opinions. Especially one as busy as this. It's that simple!

Its amazing how brave people can be when hiding in front of a computer.

I would bet a fair amount of money that if asked the same question face to face "what do you think to my new car" they would say "yeah mate quite nice indeed" regardless of whether it was true or not.

You obviously don't know me mate! ;) If somebody asks me a question, I will honestly tell them what I think and be dammed with it! :D

life's too short for the BS that its full of imo.

Unfortunately some people seem to be rather simple themselves. :p

With threads like this, I like the fact that most people have slated the car, because it shows that they are going to speak their mind about things, so if I come to ask something like "I'm looking at xx, what do you lot think, can I get better for my money?" (which I have asked in many sections of the forums on a few occasions) then I will get honest answers and find out just what the best option to me is. :)

EDIT: R124/LA420 is a good example in the post above. :D

Fox, there is a line between giving an opinion (negative or positive) and needlessy insulting someones car purchase.. that is all..

It doesn't bother me much, I just find it a shame that a young lad comes on here with an un-chavved up car that may be run of mill 'average' bland, etc to a a lot of people, and comments such as "commiserations" start appearing..

And it's seems the done thing is to hide any such behaviour behind the 'opinion' word, or use 'its a public forum'/'What do you want me to do lie?' ..

That's it, I'm not remotely saying we don't want true opinion on here, but just a tad of civility wouldn't go amiss..

Actually you may not, you may end up with something that is right for someone else.. we are all different, we all like different things, if we listened whole heartedly to some of the highly opinionated people, we'd all be driving the same thing, and we'd miss out on some great cars..
There is as much misinformation as information.. that's the problem with opinion, it's often not remotely factual and 100% personal..
