My 'PS360' controller

To be honest, the worst thing about the PS3 controllers is the triggers. Now that I have fitted 'real triggers' to my DS3 I can actually use it without getting cramp. It's still not a patch on the 360 controller, but it's perfectly usable :)

My biggest gripe with the 360 controller, and I know I go against the grain here, is the position of the left analogue stick. I just prefer them both symetrical like on the PS one. For games like crackdown etc where I have one thumb on the left stick and the other poised over the buttons it's great but for FPS games it just doesn't feel right having my thimbs at different angles on the controller!!!

But surely you have the opposite gripe with the PS3 pad?! That when you're playing a game like crackdown your fingers are in the wrong place?

Personally I've never liked the Dual Shocks much, they are badly designed and not very ergonomic. And there is a big reason why, it is a SNES pad with handles and some analog sticks tacked on. The controller was not designed around those analog sticks they were added on as an afterthought.

My biggest problem with the DS3 is the analog sticks. Swap the left one with the d-pad, add more resistance to the movement and make the dead zones a lot smaller and it would be ok, combined with real triggers. My main gripe is the resistance though, they're so floppy and feel inaccurate in comparison to 360 sticks.

The people that are getting cramps off a DS3 simply dont use it enough imo, like I use to get cramps on the 360 pad and my fingers use to get crushed on the battery pack when I first got it, that goes after you start using it regularly. Ive been using the PS pad since the PS1 days so I find the 10 years of use generally outweighs it fitting slightly better in your hand + the analogue stick placement feels much better next to each other for me. Its weird though as I do prefer the 360 pad for racing games but for FPS I prefer the DS3. Also Skate and FIFA feel sooooooooo much better with a DS3 pad.

not for me, had a PS, PS2 xbox and 360, the ergonomics of the xbox controllers is far far superior to sony controllers, always got cramps within an hour of playing on the sony pads (always) but my hands love the MS pads to bits, I regularly play away entire days and my hands feel comfortable all the while.

DS3 is horrible for shooting games, the control lay out makes bugger all sense as well as R2 and L2 being far to easy to slip off the bottom (always do this when playing CoD4 on my mates PS3).

i guess if you have girl hands the PS3 controllers are fine, but if you're a real man only a microsoft pad will cut it.

lol so not true.

Actually it is true, it really is.

Why do most PS3 games have shoot on the bumper buttons instead of the triggers? Because the triggers are **** and it's actually more comfortable to use the bumper buttons than the crappy triggers.

Then a third party makes little plastic covers for the **** triggers and makes them slightly less **** but they're still not great.

Also the sticks need to be offset, it's far better than having them next to each other.

Bleh it's all opinion at the end of the day, at least mine is the right one ;)

Riiiiight.

Well who says fire should be L2 & R2 anyway? Why arent LB and RB fire? Maybe because theyre just as bad as the PS3 triggers? I dont really see it as a law myself + its actually easier to cover all the shoulder buttons as your other fingers are actually over them.

Its completely subjective and Im pretty sure not everyone in the world prefers the 360 pad, but you get a lot of people that think they do.

whether or not you like it doesn't determine if it's the better controller objectively, only subjectively.

the 360 controller IS the best controller, both the triggers and analogue sticks of the 360 controller are convex allowing for better grip as well as comfort, directly opposed to the convex design of the PS3 triggers and analogue sticks, which make them uncomfortable and easy to slip off (whether or not this has been fixed by a 3rd party is irrelevant when discussing the controller itself).

the left analogue stick is in the top left of the 360 pad which is ergonomic as it lets your thumb sit in a more natural position, the controller case itself is also a better shape for those with adult hands.

the one and only drawback of the 360 is the D-Pad which has been done well by sony. even so how often do you use the D-pad these days in a more than secondary action?

as someone who's been using the sony design of controller for the last 9 years and the xbox design for all but 4 years i feel i can say this without being biased.

if i could do this mod myself, or could buy it at a reasonable price i'd be far more likely to buy a PS3, but as it stands the price (it's cheaper to buy a stand alone blu-ray player and 360 than a PS3) and the controller design put me off.

I agree that whether you like either pad or not is completely subjective, but you have to admit the xbox controller has been more thoroughly designed and a lot more thought has gone into it.

Back on the personal note, I too find the resistance and dead zones on PS/PS2/PS3 pads to be lacking.

Problem is, the Dualshock was effectively designed 7 years ago or something. Back then R&D funds for consoles were a fraction of what they are now, the result of which is what is by todays standards a sub-par controller. But then adding to this problem is the fact that the Dual shock has become somewhat of a gaming icon, remember the boomerang controller? How did we know that wouldn't be any good? When it was first announced it was slated because 'it looked ridiculous', not because people knew it would be rubbish, for all we knew it could have been the most ergonomic controller ever made but no one ever bothered to find out. Everyone just wanted their precious dual shock back.

The N64 controller looked stupid too but that was an epic controller.

Seeing as the PS pad design hasn't really changed fundamentally since the original PS1 analogue pad, you can actually go back to 1997 for when the current design originates from.

The simple fact is that back then the analogue sticks were tacked onto the original pad in order to compete with the N64's analogue controls. Unfortunately at the time it was the best thing available, so everyone thought it was brilliant, until later consoles showed it to be outdated.

Personally I cant stand the thing now, even though I have been used to it since the late 90's. I find the 360 pad superior in every way apart from the D-Pad, which thankfully I hardly ever have to use.

has the xbox pad got anologue buttons and dpad yet ? and why havent they sorted the D pad out like they sorted out the other problems

anyway wasnt the xbox pad a rush job after they realised the massive dinnerplate sized pad was too big for most gamers ? and why is it so horribly heavy ?

to be fair i can get used to either pad in a matter of a minutes so no worrys. even the gamecube pad with its buttons in the wrong place can be gotten used too quickly. never had hand cramps with any pad except the n64 one either

Err no?

I think you're thinking of the Xbox 1 pads and the original pad for that was great, unles you were a girl or japanese. Heavy? Do you have weak, spindly arms?

I am getting more and more used to the 360's pad and I don't find it as bad as I used to.

The perfect pad for me would me a weird cross breed of the two. Take a 360 pad, swap the D-pad and Left analogue sticks position and then add the Sony D-pad and get rid of the battery box at the back and I would say it's as close to ideal as you can get :)
