My Rally Project

Yes they are.

I bought a set of Super Oscars a while ago but they had fog lenses. Still, well worth £40 for the pair.
Then I saw a pair of Super Bioscar lenses/reflectors (brand new) on eBay for £20, so I thought it would be rude not to.
I'm going to run the H4 bulb in the Bioscars with both filaments illuminated at once, so should give me a decent beam pattern. Hope to have them on and working some time in the next couple of weeks.

EDIT
I also have a pair of spare Cibie Oscars with Sport lenses and one spare fog lens. You can never have too many lights laying around.

You're throwing them away?
I should state now that Leon never throws anything away. He has a sofa in his room with 205 GTi seats instead of cushions, along with a Nova bumper and several other random bits of cars :D I can 100% condifently say that he will not be throwing those driving lamps away :p

Car looks so much better with the clear indicators. Can't believe you managed to get Valeo lights that cheap either

After 2 weeks of it raining pretty much constantly, got a little bit more done.

I have replaced the earth cable from the gearbox, earthed the battery in the boot properly, cut the boot carpet to fit round the battery, welded my broken exhaust hanger back on and routed the power cable through the centre console ready to bolt to the cut off switch.

My Super Bioscars, spotlamp brackets, mudflaps, Phase 2 rear lights, hydraulic handbrake, brake piping and brake bias valve have all arrived so I have plenty to be getting on with in the cold winter months.

Just incase you all thought I'd stopped doing any work :p

when do we get pics ? :D

ive just sped the last 20 minutes reading this through from scratch, id missed this one after the thread you posted when you bought it

great read so far :)

You have got a lot of stuff to get on with, any more pics? Its nice to see the build evolve graphically, makes a world of difference.

I dread to think how much money you have spent.

I can't really show any pictures, unless you all want to see a sexy length of thick black cable bolted to a strut top. ;)
As for how much I've spent, the majority of expensive components (cage, seats, harnesses, 4 branch manifold, uprated dampers) were all purchased a few years ago so I've "written off" the cost of those. Stuff like the battery box, hydro handbrake and so on probably adds up to a couple of hundred :)

Are you doing all this stuff outside in the cold or in a nice warm workshop? Even thinking about working on my car outside it making my hands feel numb!

So what's next? And when are you going to uprate the standard headlight wiring?! :p

Outside in the cold and rain. The garage I rent currently has my old 205 in it, no power, and access is partially blocked by two Harleys which will need shifting out of the way soon because I need the car outside to remove the roll cage for shotblasting.

I might do the wiring next - just waiting for Autosparks to deliver my new fuse box and relay bases.

Very nice! Really good rally mods you got going there! Im not too sure about the fogs though!

I'm not a big car man but I remember my brother did something like this to his Vauxhall Nova. I believe it was a GSi. I'll ask him anways and report back!

Fogs?
Those are the standard main beam driving lights, which won't be used anyway for rallies.

Anyway:
With the untimely death of the Mondeo (a culmination of problems) I've been unfortunately forced to whip the 205 into road-going trim so I can actually get to work :D Plan is to save for another 205 in the meantime so I can then use that as a road car.
In a way I'm glad this happened - it's meant I've discovered loads of niggly faults (ie the brakes don't actually stop the car) which would have doubtless cropped up a week before my first rally.

Not news as such, but I'd forgotten how much bloody good FUN it is to drive. :D

No, I'm more interested in trying to get 300 miles out of a tank of Optimax at the moment :D

Not me, hence the "trying"! I've managed about 250 miles to a tank so far, the tank is about 45 litres if I remember rightly.

In all seriousness, running the car daily has brought to light a lot of small problems that I'm glad I discovered - nothing worse than rallying an untried car.

1) The oil filler neck of the XU engine is of very poor design, and often becomes brittle and splits - so you can't top the oil up, and oil is thrown from the crank out of the split making a big mess. Mine had split and has now been replaced with a new one - this will suffice until I design and make my own new patent pending system.

2) The car idles too high, especially when cold. 2500rpm at idle uses a LOT of petrol! I've toned it down somewhat but it really needs setting on a gas analyser.

3) There is some wear in the engine mountings. I get slight tapping when I let the clutch up, so I'll save for some Group N ones which are harder and longer lasting than the standard ones.

4) There is a very real problem with the brakes. Although recently refurbished, they are totally wooden with too much pedal travel. And when they do actually bite, they lock up. So until I can afford the Wilwood kit I'm saving for I'll strip and rebuild the calipers and master cylinder from the other car and swap everything over. I've got new discs and pads waiting to go on too, and I'll run the copper lines inside the car at the same time. A job for a weekend off I think!

5) It's really hard to get the key in the drivers door lock, so I've replaced the locks and keys. I'm not really worried about them matching the igniton.

6) The clonking from the rear is (I think) being caused by a sheared anti roll bar mount. I'm going to whip the wheels off tomorrow and investigate further.

They're all 50l according to Haynes.

Adjust the clutch cable. Mine used to do it too :)
