My review of Western Digital 320GB RE3 and 2 in raid0 :)

WCAT10944###

First one was DOA, click of death after 1 day of use
Next one would cause RAID0 to fail within 2 weeks, tried a few things in the space of 2 months (different port, different rail, etc etc) and it always failed on this disk, sometimes it clicks.

Either the box was dropped heavily or batch.

Stimpy_7,

I cant offer you any results but I was in exactly the same circumstances, but I decided to return a new VR and replaced it with 2x250Gb RE3s because it meant that I could get similar performance for half the cost...

I dont really need to save the money but wanted speed, other than maybe not being the first in a map Im happy...

thanks for the reply.

Were you running raid raptors previously? if so do you find that the RE3 are faster/ more responsive than those were?

I currently have an old 74gb raptor and i'm getting the upgrade bug, also the noise it makes is slowly driving me insane!

It's a tough call as i don't really need vast amounts of space, a 150gb vr would do me fine i think, although these pose an interesting prospect.

Cheers

I only had a single 150Gb Raptor and before that a 74Gb so its hard to compare.

It sounds like perhaps 2x 74Gb VRs might be ideal for you (if you can find them) - I just thought the loss in relative speed just didnt matter to me (the savings go towards SSD eventually which will negate VRs usefulness in my eyes)...

I have noticed though that VR prices have gone up recently - my 300Gb VR was under £200 when I bought it - now its £230+...

yeah prices have gone pretty crazy eh! Yeah i think 2 x 74gb vr would probably be ideal, although that's also quite an expensive option. Maybe a 150 vr would be the most economically viable.

Did you notice an improvement coming from a single raptor to the re3 raid setup? i like a nice snappy feel to the OS so that's the most important thing for me really.

It definitely feels better, but then Ive also gone from a system that needed a reinstall to a new clean one and also moved from XP to Vista aswell as going from a single OS HD to a RAID 0 OS HD (Ive also uged from X2 to C2D :p).

Quite a lot of changes youd agree - no doubt someone will confirm my opinion, I just dont want to give you an unequivocal answer since it could be attributed to any one (or more) of my changes...

Cheers dude :)

Very pleased with my 3x250gb re3's, overall a much snappier pc which is what i wanted :)

I have bitten lol, i had 2 x 250 re3's just orded an additional drive.

Really impressed with the drive so far, and the return from adding a 3rd in a raid 0 setup look pretty good.

What stripe size are you using?

Im running on a 32k stripe at the moment, found it to be the fastest and most balanced so far on the Maximus Formula.
