National insurance cut

Agreed on both points! The child benefit thing is so broken, probably even more so now! He is now saying it is ok for one family to have an income of 120K and not have to pay any of it back while a single earner family that already pays more tax will loose it all together at 80K. I have no idea how they could make it a household allowance under the current self assessment process it would take a major effort behind the scenes linking peoples tax returns to partners which I just don't see happening.

I think that's why he was saying the household allowance wouldn't come in until 2026. The increase to £60k before starting the taper is just a stopgap while they work on the system over the next two years. So it's better than nothing, but doesn't solve the problem (yet).

I'd be surprised if they manage to get a household allowance working in two years, but that's the intention.

Wow.. talk about fanboi-ism..

The opposition does not have to announce any plans until the election date is announced. at which point it will be placed in their manifesto. If you like it, then vote for them.

The whole point of the opposition at the moment is to point out mistakes of the governing party, to keep them humble and accountable for their actions.

Me personally, I would rather have no plan than a ****ing **** plan.. and if going back to square one means life before this government came to power then sign me up!

The amount of people on here already making excuses for a hypothetical future Labour government is hilarious.

The NHS is crap, as anyone who’s used it lately knows. One day it might click for you that the reason why it’s crap is because the concept is flawed. Especially if immigrants can also use the service freely from day one.

But no, it’s easier to just say “hur dur, that’s racist!”

I can understand the frustration that it's open to anyone to use freely, even if they haven't contributed to the system, but to be honest - if we're going down that road then how are Mohammed and his family fresh off the boat any different to Shazza and Wayne and their 10 kids using it after never working a day in their life?

It's far from "crap", but also far from flawless, definitely some changes needed, but it's definitely something to aspire to rather than want to get rid of.

Some minor suggestions:

Remove the need for a prescription for some common medications; inhalers, contraceptive pills etc. and give pharmacists more prescribing powers (I believe this has been done recently or is in the pipeline?).

Add a charge for a doctor's appointment - this could be done with exactly the same criteria as prescription charges, e.g. exemptions for certain benefits/under 16 over 65/pregnancy/certain illnesses/etc. The exemption would not apply if you didn't turn up. This would only need to be a token amount, say £10, enough to stop people wasting the doctor's time, or from not bothering to go to an appointment they've made.

The same as the above for A&E (ok, not so sure about this one, or how it would work really). If deemed to actually be a medical emergency, then no charge.

One of the main issues with the NHS is that they don’t fill out paperwork correctly.

The biggest abusers of the NHS is medical holidays.. especially Americans. They come over with their medical issue and the NHS treats them then not fill out the paperwork to get the money back.

Even with Europeans, with the NHS not filling out the paperwork they are leaving billions on the table.

One out of three. That's poor. Brexit has barely had any effect one way or the other

Ignore the direct economic effect, which can be argued and results obfuscated. We’ve had five Prime Ministers in eight years. That’s no way to run a country. This kind of chaos scares off investment and results in poor long-term planning.

austerity was the solution to a debt problem (caused by the previous Labour government and the financial crisis), not a cause.

Sometimes the remedy is worse than the disease. Austerity destroyed the growth that would have paid off the debt.

Where's the 80k figure coming from or am I reading things wrong. Thought it was being moved from 50-60k?

Currently the taper starts at 50K and you loose the lot at 60K under the changes the taper will start at 60K and you will loose the lot at 80K. Now allowing a couple to earn a combined 120K (60K each) before they loose any of it while a single earner will loose it at 80K a 40K difference!

Zero ambition in this one.

5k increase in VAT to "promote investment".....in accountants maybe :D
5k UK ISA. Lets see how they will classify that

Other than that....doesn't seem very bold.

I'll hold my breath until all his numbers are fact checked though. Too much "but Labour" in his speech, that's one way to lose a bit of credibility.

Same thing every time round though isn't it. One gets in power, makes a mess. Next one gets in power, doesn't fix anything, makes further mess. Round and round in circles we go.

Maybe it's time the UK public take a risk and bet on a different party. Can't make things much worse than they already are...

Not this time - on the rare occasions we get a Labour government normally they start with a strong Tory economy and lots of money to spend on their ridiculous manifesto pledges. This time they are not going to get their usual easy ride - they are going to suffer with the post covid impacts that the Tories have. They dont have a clue how hard this is going to be - hopefully they dont do too much damage in what will likely be a short tenure.

One things for sure - the the threads on here will be hilarious.. :D
