National insurance cut

Yet people bang on about illegal immigrants costing the nhs, they are even a smaller drop in the ocean.

Genuine question, how do other countries deal with these scenarios. I expect the US will be no different, but how about the likes of France, Germany, Switzerland, Dubai. I'm curious whether many countries would pay for expensive medical care for tourists/visitors.

Hunt is a genius.
They know they have little chance of winning an election so they cut 2p off NI, Labour get into power, realise that the books don't tally up for obvious reasons, have to reinstate that 2p tax cut and then the Tories can scream about how Labour immediately raised taxes, etc. and maybe they can get back in next time round.
I shall look forward to watching this happen in real time.
Nothing genius about it, its salting the earth to the detriment of the country. Slow clap

Visitors and visa overstayers? Visa overstayers need deporting and all visitors should be forced to show health insurance at point of departure/entry , I guess.

You must be able to prove you have a valid Travel Insurance policy whether you are visiting Dubai or another city in the UAE.

If you're a tourist you should be taking out travel insurance just for this eventually

Just 15% of ISA subscribers make use of the full allowance.
And only something like 17% of the population even subscribe to an ISA so really this is just another perk for the rich to hide money from taxation. Those who are maxing these things out and can find another 5k to top it up are very likely already going to be among the highest earners in the country. I’d love to have a problem like how to invest a spare 25k a year sadly it ain’t happening!

It's quite a tactile move actually, cheap "tax cut" headlines for half of the price of an income tax cut. It's clear he wants to appeal to the middle aged working class. He has the pensioners in the bag already after honouring the triple lock
He might not have them in the bag plenty are being very vocal about the NI cut only benefitting those still working while they get nothing. Would be quite nice if a lot of old people decide to stay at home come election day.

Yes and I highly doubt anyone would put it in UK equities, maybe those FTSE listed companies which don't actually operate within the UK.

I imagine most would just shift any UK bond holdings they have or were planning to purchase to the £5k 'British ISA' and use the whole of their 'normal' allowance in other markets.

It’s quite obvious that the focus on employee NI cuts in recent budgets is part of a long term play to abolish it completely. It could be gone completely in just 4 more budgets. Just need to then replace employers NI with something more sensible too. Pulling more pensioners into tax through frozen thresholds is obviously not a vote winner for them but framing it as a cut for everyone else is shrewd.

Overall it’s a surprisingly good move by a Tory chancellor whose party depends almost entirely on those votes.

I would happily see NI disappear I’ve long said having both it and income tax is confusing and over complicated. It also hides the real tax burden on the individual which I guess has been convenient for successive governments. I would really like to see a route and branch overhaul of our entire tax system we have too many complex and confusing rules which leave far to many loopholes open to exploitation.

Keep it simple so that it is easy to comprehend and manage

They want to shift rentals into large companies. They want to do away with mum and dad 2nd properties.

They want the big slice of the housing benefit payments.
Even John Lewis is moving into this area.
Another hidden policy to transfer wealth from tax payers to the private sectors.

People need to see under the bonnet of a policy.
Just like the N.I cut, there should have never been a cut to N.I. were do you think that cut will be funded from?

There should have been an increase in income bands.

Hope you paid your CGT on the profits of flipping.
Less personal allowance and allowances for buying selling yes. Ripped my liver out but there was always going to be enough profit in a rising market to cover it . I just got in at the right time to do it , nothing more nothing less. I'm talking 2003 so had the best part of 20 years .

Like I eluded to I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole at the moment and I can't how it could ever go back to how it was . Just look at rightmove at the moment, either everything has been for sale for months or recently reduced in price only a very few houses come on and sell instantly at the moment. Go back 3 years agents couldn't get hold of enough property to sell.

Thought it was less than that? Ie, my inheritance would be taxed.

The inheritance tax allowance is £325,000 plus potentially a further inheritance tax property allowance of £175,000 which applies when you leave your house to your children/grandchildren. Allowances pass between spouses, so you can end up with a £1 Million inheritance tax free for the children if both parents have died with appropriate wills in place.

I think what will happen is the polls won't move much but in the background this budget will help them I think and come election time it could be a closer result than expected.
Yup, a lot of left-wing surprised Picicku face come election result day. If they're expecting a Labour landslide then they're going to be disappointed. It's going to be a hung parliament with a Labour majority at best.

Nicely put by the FT this morning:
FT said:
“One more thing,” Hunt said, copying Steve Jobs’ famous catchphrase. “Lower taxes.” Hold on. Jobs did not announce the iPhone just after breaking everyone’s laptops. You cannot use “one more thing” to say people will still pay the highest taxes since 1948 but in slightly different ways.

Whilst the fanbois….
(I almost feel embarrassed on their behalf……the desperation :D )

On the back of this budget? I don’t think it’s going to have any impact. Until the results are in all we have are polls, so lets see what happens there. Let’s see if the Tories can avoid sinking below 20%. There are only so many people who will stay in a cold bath of sick because it’s been dyed blue.

No, this budget hasn't moved the needle much if at all. But as someone who's lived long enough to see too many elections. I can predict how it will go. I gave my prediction, you can save it and come back to see if I'm right. lets see.
