National speed limit to be cut to 50mph on "most roads" as early as 2010

Anyone else not sick to the back teeth with being treated like an idiot by the government ? Good grief I'm soooo tired.

Speed doesnt kill. The stationary brick wall does that. Hello Mr politician, what use have you been today, are you keeping yourself busy, don't answer that.

This country is absolutely laughable, a bad joke, exept it isn't really that funny any more :(

So what are you all going to do about it? March on Downing Street with your keyboard? Sign up to an online petition? Sit there and accept it?

Labour are there by apathy and voting scandals, yet people complain. Even the Tories couldn't have handed this country to the dogs as well as Labour has.

What are pedestrians doing on a national speed limit road anyhow? How about getting more police cars on the road so they can catch people in the act. Uncertain deterrent is one of the best measures available. How often can you say you even see a police car on a long-ish journey?

This is absolutely pathetic. All those ****ing idiots in government are trying to do is justify their worthless job description. We seriously need Labour out of government. I swear monkey's could run the country better.

Labour's answer to every traffic problem: introduce more speed cameras, decrease the amount of traffic police on the road.

We have ****ing idiots running the country. 12 months ago I wasn't even bothered about voting at the next election, but now i most definately will vote for anything but Labour.

"Doctor! the medicine isn't working!"
"Double the dose!"

Road deaths aren't really getting lower, not by any significant amount. There used to be a year on year fall but this stopped (or at least drastically slowed down) at the same time as the government abandoned most of it's road safety schemes ("green cross code", "dip don't dazzle", etc. etc.) and replaced them with "speed kills".

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this isn't about about safety, nor is it about making a profit, it's about extending the reach of control and surveillance the government has over it's population, justified by citing safety and environmental crap. In a year or so's time these cameras will start logging your numberplates so as to record details of every journey you make. This will be justified as being necessary to fight all those terrorists who register their cars in their own name.

Very well put, you have covered pretty much all my thoughts on this.

Complaining is a British thing. Politics is not a thing for the British. Now, I'm going to stop post whoring this evening/morning and contemplate moving to another country.

Just had a thought, this will be great for spotting the driving idiots. They will drop the limit to 50, and people will pootle along at exactly 50. I will get annoyed, and overtake them, and that person will then go to people and tell stories of this "nutter" who "went flying past them at 60 on the road".... forgetting the fact that yesterday they drove that exact same road in the exact same car, at exactly the same time, but doing bang on 60mph, and consider themselves to be gods gift to safe driving....
And you'll be fined, as the article states they will use average speed camera.
Nice, so those without Cruise Control will spend more time concentrating on the speedo than the road ahead
While I think lowering these limts is a bad thing, your example above is non-existant as it takes zero extra effort to keep to the limit if that's what you wish to do.

This seems to have been kept very quiet, not seen anything on BBC or similar.

Considering the death toll on UK roads just a few years ago was > 6000 per annum, @3000 is far better though of course a single death is still a tragedy.

A head on collision on an A road where both vehicles are doing 50 rather than 60 is likely to prove just as fatal. You could crash at 30 MPH and be unlucky enough to be trapped in your vehicle and it catches fire. If you hit someone at 25 MPH and they go under the wheels, they are likely to be killed by crushing as splattered at 50 - 60 MPH.

What's needed is a programme of road improvements and maybe better (ongoing) driver training and awareness. Many "A" roads in the UK are little more than slightly widened cart tracks. Compare that to the USA where even relatively minor normal roads have a decent shoulder on either edge and frequent overtaking lanes where drivers can wait and pass safely without pulling out into oncoming traffic.

Average speed cameras...sounds like a prelude to road charging to me...

It's already happening. At least three A roads have dropped to 50 around me, most notably the one that goes past the Belfry golf course (Actually this particular one is semi sensible as it's busy and will make it slightly less treacherous to join off the side roads of which there are a number.)

I don't think the vast majority would support the proposals.

First of all, that's debatable. Please don't assume that the people on this forum represent the majority view of all things motoring - in many cases they do not. I know people who are in favour of speed cameras for instance, and one colleague told me with a straight face that he saw no reason why any car should have more than 250bhp. And he doesn't stand out much from many people I've talked to about cars. Most people don't love cars, they just drive them, and something like this will make little difference. One road near me (the A1198) is a dead straight A road (it's on what used to be a Roman Road, Ermine Street) and I already encounter loads of cars that already do 50mph on it. There was a letter in a local freebie paper a few months ago from some idiot who wanted the limit reduced to 50 on the road because he said that was a sensible speed and he saw no reason for anyone to go any faster.

But more importantly, it doesn't need to be supported by the vast majority - just by possible defectors from Labour at the next election.

Completely agree.

The A127 is one of the first victims of this approach. Average speed cameras for over 6 miles set mostly to 50. I believe they are soon going to reduce the whole section to 50.

I was driving on the the A127 yesterday. Average speed was actually about 40/45, as people struggled to maintain the same speed as each other, so it ended up being a case of speeding up/slowing down, rinse and repeat. I left the road as soon as possible and went along local town roads instead.
