NEARLY 2 YEARS WAITING: New Mustang GT PP is finally mine!

Personally, I'd get something sensible for the time until the new Mustang arrives. You've got the usual crappy UK winter with it's salt coming so the Golf R sounds like a good shout to me. Do you really want to be buying something that has the potential to throw some big bills as a stop-gap car?

What I've being thinking, dropping 35-40k on a GTR is not smartest idea, because I suspect after running it for six months it will be wanting another service, new brakes, tyres which will be an easy £3000, then the depreciation I lose I suspect an easy £5000 in ownership for depreciation and maintenance.

Golf R I will buy bottom of market to try and limit depreciation, found a car at VW, got them down to 19k, 41k miles, 3DR, DSG and if I buy between now and 30th it will have 2yr warranty, 2yr servicing included just have to buy on finance, but I will simply pay it off within 14 day period. Just trying to find out from VW if this warranty is on the vehicle or in my name, as if its vehicle it will be great for re-sale in six months to sell car with VW warranty, if its in my name then the warranty is pretty worthless to be honest. Still just serviced, new tyres, much cheaper to run so my only cost is depreciation, probably couple of grand tops and the money saved in fuel, tax and insurance.

Depreciation on a £35-45k GTR is non-existent. I bought mine, sold it 2 years later and could buy it again now (another 2 years later) all for the same price.

Servicing etc would cost a few hundred if the cars just had the big one. Tyres are under £1000 and you wouldn't need new brakes unless you were tracking it. At most new pads which are £250 per axle. If I wasn't using mine on track I wouldn't have gotten through a set of Cup 2s just on the road for a good while.

If you want to buy a car and not lose money on depreciation I'd be going for a GTR. The market bottomed out a few years ago and hasn't moved since. Every face lifted version gets more and more expensive which keeps the older models above £35k.

Ah come on, don't try to convince me man, I need to be sensible haha. Think of the fuel I will save in a Golf R! :D

What is really bad I've found a stunning GTR which seems exceptional value and is a clean car, as had it checked out by Kindai and its a very good price its listed at, if I can get another 1-2k off then its a real good buy problem is I really also want to try a Golf R as I remember driving a 2.0 TFSi Sirroco or whatever it is called and though it was pretty dull and boring, it was exceptionally nice to drive and quite capable for a FWD hatch.

As I said I like a GTR because its a GTR, I've had one for a weekend and they are epic, though its size but mainly the speed you have to go to enjoy it properly was not ideal.
I like the Golf R because its smaller (hot hatch or hyper hatch is it these days?) and really quite a good car to throw around on narrower lanes and it has the advantage of costing around 1/3-1/2 in fuel, tax and insurance in comparison. In theory the money saved means come March next year I can just pay the full 50k for the new Mustang in cash, pretty much gonna be around 50k I reckon due to selecting all the options.

A GTR will cost me 35-40k, will probably sell it for 35-40k, though if I need it gone quick then I would maybe have to price it under others in the market to make it shift faster, something to be prepared to do.
Golf R will cost me 18k, will probably sell for 16-18k.

So depreciation wise they are both similar, its just down to running cost and whatever maintenance bills they throw up.

I was also considering an RS4 but pricing is very hit and miss, seen some cars at 12k and others at 30k, chances of getting a great one around 15k is slim and then trying to re-sell it looks hard, being monitoring RS246 and other various forums, private adverts and they are not moving unless sold at bottom of the market around 12-13k.

I've also being looking at C63 AMG, dismissed it because stupid, very stupid, don't need another V8, got one coming and an AMG in Winter, be as useless as the Mustang was on a freezing icy day.

Well the GTR is an absolute bargain, just had a bit of work done to it, up to date servicing with Litchfields, all major needs and wants sorted.

I mean, I guess it depends if you want us all to mock you for turning up in a Golf when it could have been a GTR at the next meet :D :D :D

I'll just bring the M3 then. ;)

Anyway stop it, stop it, now I am actually considering just going and buying the GTR. You bad person!

What about the TT-RS?

I just can't get pas the style and understeer, might be stupid, but I have to much internal resistance when I think about it. Yes the performance and sound is amazing, but it dislike handling dynamics (driven a stock and modified one) and the understeer for me was quite highlights and it did not really want to stop doing it unless slow down, could cover ground amazingly fast but in a driving style I like. They are amazing, just not for me.

The new car has already been introduced, that’s how he has ordered it. Anyone in the market for one will know this.

No it has not, only the online enthusiast which is a very small percentage of Fords customer base know. The new car cannot be configured online and there is still no pricing, right now all you can buy online is the old generation.

If the new car gets released, the motoring press get hold of it and go OMG this destroys the outgoing model and they fixed the NCAP, values in short term of outgoing model will be further hit those keeping current models for long haul will be fine, they will probably bottom around 25k late next year and if Ford discontinue the V8 in say 5 years they will as other cars have done no doubt begin to build back up again.

My only reason for sale is I've had enough of manuals, simple as that, I will take a good flappy paddle automatic any day over a manual now, remember I use my cars daily, if it was a weekend toy then a manual would be acceptable, though I'd still prefer paddles.

head says Golf R, heart says GT-R. Go with heart :p

Heart is actually pulling me towards a C63 AMG, if I was to go with heart a stop gap car is something more like:
- C63 AMG 6.3 Performance Pack car
- GTR R35 Stage 1
- Golf R Stage 1
- Audi B7 RS4
- E92 M3

Is the list in order of preference so C63 lures me the most, but GTR and Golf R are most sensible, for holding value and easier to sell on, Golf R because its affordable and I can price it at bottom of market, GTR because values hold quite firm.

Will the GTR make the mustang feel like a downgrade?

completely different driving machines with very different characteristics so I very much doubt it

Pretty much as per Big Spender says, they are so far apart in driving style they are different enough, yes the GTR is massively faster from a stop, from a roll I suspect won't be a lot in it, especially the new 10-speed once tuned. But they drive quite differently, had plenty of seat time in GTR's which is fortunate on both track and road.

But back to Simon, yes a GTR is bonkers fast, yes it will go fast no matter the weather and from rolling or a stop and its turbo charged so they always feel even faster than they are. So yes back to the Golf R is a better idea, because even though its a very quick car, its also rather dull and bland to drive, whereas a GTR is quite an event to drive as is a Mustang.

I am not decided, going to test drive a couple of Golf R, I might find them too dull or just drive like crap, so dismiss the idea which really then as a Winter car only leaves GTR or B7 RS4.

Anyone interested will go to the Ford website and find out that there is a new model due next year.. it’s hardly top secret hush hush.

https://www.ford.co.uk/future-vehicles/new-mustang

True but its not easy to order one, many dealerships refusing to take orders on Mustang forums as they have no idea still or have old inventory. No pricing, no press reviews.

When pricing is out, when it the configuration is online and you can properly order and the press reviews come out. Current model will either depreciate or appreciate, I'd made the decision to sell, also as it becomes more common knowledge there is a chance more and more will sell up creating more competition forcing prices down.

But I simply decided I was not willing to gamble on values going up or down, I'd made the decision to order a new one and so it was time to let the old one go, albeit a few grand less than I got, the guy got a deal, nice chap he can now enjoy it as I have. I can in the meantime try something else or several other cars whilst I wait for next one and start all over again. Cars are expensive hobbies. :D

Previous generation? It's a mild facelift not an all new model.

Mild?
I think people consider:
- New gen3 engine with power hike, economy improvement, 0-60 going from 4.8s down to under 4s
- Active exhaust
- Magneride
- 10-speed automatic
- facelift externally
- Digital dash
- Option of Recaro seats

I guess I consider mild differently to you, my consideration of mild is like when the E46 M3 got updated to have LED rear lights, m track mode, MK60 DSC, that is mild in my view. When the engine is an updated revision with more power, a new gearbox, new interior, new exterior styling and a lot of other technology introduced if quite a big update. :)

Dealers got initial pricing on September 22nd and they were allowed to share on October 11th..

No they have no pricing, the dealership aint got a clue, a guy on this very forum owns a dealership, he has no pricing, one of my mates is a sales manager where I have purchased my MY18 from, he has also purchased one himself personally and he has no idea on price either.

All that is happening is some more switched on dealers can place an order in Vista to get people in the queue, my is order no.3 in the UK or no.5 I believe, but that is all they can is take your order along with the options you want. Yet some dealerships are point blank refusing to do so one guy tried 5 dealerships and they all refused or had no idea about MY18, I had to point him in the direction of a dealership who would take his order.

So it really is not very easy to try and get the updated model in real life.

Ok I know I must be missing something, but where does that Perrys link say anything about them being 2018 MY ?

It does not, it was found on the Mustang forums and it is evident it is MY18 due to the option packs, primarily custom pact 1, 2, 3 and 4 as they were not available for current generation. But speaking with Ford UK and owner and sales managers at other dealerships Ford have still not released any pricing in the UK for MY18 and its options, right now you can order a car, but there is no pricing and the options are still not crystal clear.

This is why I said to PMKeates, if he has pricing, then share it because it really is not out yet.

Just had a quick spin in an Golf R and Audi S3, both at main dealer, sub 10k miles, 17 plate so pretty new.
Took the Golf out, just a great all rounder, albeit to easy, hence the dull statements, but at the same time very nice to drive. It was 18" wheels, passive suspension and rode lovely. DSG, launched the car (not LC mode), just regular stomp it and boy do they shift and overtaking with DSG in auto effortless, seriously quick machine. Nice inside and well put together, it just does everything, actually sounds nice inside too due to some fake cabin fake noises but they are pleasant.

S3 DSG, did not bother driving it far, identical car, though sounded not as good inside, but the cabin I really disliked, same quality and all that but the cheap Chinese tablet coming out the dish just looks nasty in my opinion and was more a distraction than useful and the whole interior though lovely quality (leather seats vs cloth in golf) just seemed bland and boring. Also prefer the looks on Golf more road presence!

In short fantastic car, think the chassis needs more power to be entertaining though, otherwise too accomplished, but as a short term car the dullness is not an issue, having something nice, effortless and easy to drive with lots of performance on offer in all weather is appealing as a short term ownership. But for me Golf>Audi !

The more I think and brain engages the less I think GTR is good idea and the one which was tempting me sold last night and I do like the idea of having something smallish with AWD, so I think I am definetely leaning towards a Golf R. Won't be buying the one I test drove I just wanted to drive a near new example so when I test drive some older higher mileage examples I now have a basis for comparison. :)

Did you have the golf in R mode? 4wd is only activated in R mode.

Yes it was in race mode, drove it in auto, auto sport and on paddles. DSG was super quick, quite impressive. The sales guy was young and happy for me to push it and I don't take any risk so he was fine with me giving it plenty of right foot. R mode made it louder and rev higher, infact I was very impressed with how well the motor revs, seems it was changing up just shy of 7000rpm and it pulled really well up top, even in 3rd gear. :)

He also showed me how to do LC, race mode, ESP hold until it beeps so full off, foot on brake and floor it, holds revs at 4000rpm then release brake. Did not release the brake as was a 30 area when he showed me this, but he assures me LC on these won't break the car and can be used as often as you like. He said it will accelerate quicker than it will by just stomping the loud pedal from a stand still, which I did do a couple of times.

It's not, 4wd is available in all modes

This, its Haldex FWD bias car that moves power to rear.
Race mode improves throttle response and sharpens DSG up and increases rev limits I think, might do some other stuff, the sales guy did explain but I was just driving the thing. Doubt it does anything with the power split, but cannot confirm.

Just found this:

I thought it felt quite quick, that confirms it, 4.45s to 60mph and 10.9s to 100mph for a stock car.
Going to test drive a 3DR stage 1 car tomorrow. See if it feels any quicker than the stock one I drove today.

That's not stock or the speedo is significantly out (easy to tweak with VCDS), stock manual cars are normally low 5s or high 4s to 60.

That is DSG, yes the manual is much slower, 2s by 100 compared to DSG.
All I will say is from the one I drove today, which was a near new car at VW the performance on offer seems a lot quicker than the VW stats would suggest.

has the mustang gone gibbo ?

Yes gone m8. Need to find a car by end of month ideally as the M3 goes in body shop for its full respray, so I shall be car less, haha!

In preparation for the next group meet at the pod, I've got us all some mirror stickers to remind us that its Gibbo we are looking at. :D :D :D

Yet on the road or the race track your always in my mirrors and I am several horsepower down. ;)

Don't make the Golf angry, it will mess you up! ;)

Nipped in to OcUK today and saw Gibbo’s Golf in the car park... then we went for a quick spin. What an absolute riot of a car! Really impressive as a point to point weapon, for the money they’re an absolute bargain. :)

Was good to see you mate, if I was keeping it or buying one as a more long term solution I'd for sure be fitting up a TTE470 kit as those are even more nuts. :D
