NEC LCD20WGX2 review *** UPDATED 25/02/06 ***

One question: This NEC looks amazing for games/films, but for normal office tasks, do you figure the glossy reflective LCD is just as easy on the eyes as matte screen LCDs or less?

Honestly, it's easy on the eyes as much as normal LCD ... or even better
because there is a presence of additional "smoothness", caused by the
glossy panel film. Sometimes, literally, I really feel like I'm working on
the VERY good CRT. Crazy as that.

I'm using at my office "normal" BenQ 17" LCD and it's honestly somehow much
"harsher" then the NEC. I'm realising that now.

So ... all in all, no worries for the office work :)

That's it!
I'm finally going to dive into the widescreen TFT world & purchase this mutha.
Time to get rid of my aging 4:3 Formac Gallery.
I can't believe I paid over a grand for that TFT monitor when it first came out!

Very nice review igors.
Thanks for putting the effort in to provide something so comprehensive ;)

Hi,

Had few responses that people are having problems accessing
the pictures page. As you may notice, I'm not using the standard
"80" HTTP port, it's 10973. I have HttpFileServer running on my
home pc (where the monitor is).

It seems that they are you using firewall or something and access
to the port 10973 is blocked (outbound).

I will update the review data to include this info.

Forgot to mention ... tonight I will focus on the viewing angles, high
FPS gaming and dot pitch & 2D clarity. Hopefully, there will be another
review update tonight ;)

Great thread igors. It's def. a firewall thing with your pictures, i can't get to them from work but have no problem accessing them all at home.

Have to say i love the look of this monitor and it seems excellent value. I've been holding out for the new widescreen Viewsonic's, but i'm really tempted by this NEC now. And it looks like Overclockers will be stocking them as well. Decisions, decisions.....

The NEC certainly looks good. Planning to upgrade in the next 2 months. My only concern is with the glossy NEC screen. Previously noted in the Sony monitors as being too reflective and distracting. I wonder if it would be suitable for extended use.

Hi MrMuscle,

This is actually my first glossy screen. Honestly, I had the same worries as you before I ordered the NEC. However, after few days of using it no complains at all. It's not distractive or reflective in a way that's annoying for me. Maybe it's just personal preference.

One thing which I definitely like about the glossy panel is that contrast and colour richness is much more pronounced and it's somehow "smoothing" the
screen. It's not so harsh to the eyes. I'm using the BenQ 17" LCD at my office and honestly this screen is much more pleasant to the eye.

In HL2 say, when you strafe left and right in front of some scenery you don't see any loss of definition in textures in front of you?

Keep your eye fixed on a certain part of the scenery as you strafe and track it with your eyes to see if the texture loses definition.

Interesting question !

I have relatively fast computer. I'm getting 9260 3DMARK05 / 5250 3DMARK06 with heavily overclocked 7800GTX & Athlon X2 3800 & 2GB OZC 4000EB Platinum RAM. In Far Cry & HL2 I have (constant) high number of FPS even @ 1680 x 1050/4X AA/Max Quality ... so game play is very smooth.

Just in case, I decreased the quality levels, AA, AF, as the maximum possible FPS is preferable, so that I can push the monitor to the limits. What I did for you is tried to spin/jump/move/strafe around like a mad man (until my head hurts). In HL2 my victim for testing was one big stone and in Far Cry one really nice tree. After I started to feel dizzy :) I decided it's time to stop the testing and give you the opinion:

- While focusing on those single objects and strafing there was noticable loss of texture sharpness. It's not drastic at all and without your hint I doubt that I will notice this normally (while focusing on global scenery). Also, this is more visible when you are REALLY close to the object. When you are looking from the moderate distance, it's definitely almost unnoticeable. Somehow, it may sound strange, I liked this effect ?! It's like slight motion blur (if I can phrase it like that). Didn't notice any geometry loss, tearing or trailing of the textures. Also, such motion blur is happening (and it's noticeable) only during strafe. On the global (gaming) picture, I have to say that this is not something which is irritating, distracting or making discomfort.

Hope this make sense. If not, I will try to be more specific.

** UPDATE

Guys, this panel is so damn fast. Just finished the session in DOOM 3 in full wide screen 1680x1050 glory. Don't know the FPS, but is was smooth as a silk. It was ridiculously good ! I can't get enough of this monitor. Also, I tried again the ritual in DOOM 3 as suggested by Poopscoop. This time, strafe "motion blur" was even less noticeable. When I say "motion blur" it's not something like framing the fast movement with low speed camera shutter (and leaving the motion trail). It's just like that texture is little bit out of the focus (is this maybe the perfect term ? ). It's much less here maybe because the DOOM3 is dark game and textures are less pronounced, not sure. All in all ... amazing gaming experience.

Viewing angles are just great. I will update my review shortly ;)

What a huge leap from my old CRT.

Looks excellent, could you try some games at 1440x900 to see what they are like?

Hi,

Just tried 1440x900 16:10 aspect ratio @ HL2 Lost Coast.. Monitor is expanding (pan & scan) this resolution nicely. It's completely playable and , of course, no black frames are added around the screen, as resolution expansion was taking place.

New review update 18/02/06 is available ! Enjoy.

I have few questions for the forum administrator:

- Can you, please please please, update the main thread subject to
include the "18/02/06" date. Not sure why I can't do this. Last time, it
was auto magically updated ... probably touched by magic hands
of the forum admin.

- Why I'm run out of smiles (and other emoticons) when editiing the main
review post? It says that I have too much of them. I can't express
my feelings anymore :(

That was a fabulous review mate and has just completely put a grin on my face. You did what few people do and tested it fussily for gaming and from what you say it sounds like it passes the test.

If it also scales resolution on a 1:1 ratio like 1280x1034 then I am well and truly sold.

Sound fantastic. lets just hope OCUK give us a good price! Oh and does anyone know what NEC's dead pixel policy is? If the screen has a smooth finish then there'll be no massaging them to life again!

Richdog, thank you !

It's user review for the users. It's honest and not pretentious and it's dealing with the real life situations and, what is important, form the user perspective.

As you spotted, yes, it's the same review on the widescreengaming forum. Honestly, I don't like to cross link the other forums. It's best to keep things separately for every forum community. I have to keep the updates everywhere, but it's not real pain anyhow.

You mean 1280x1024 ? If yes, already tried. Resolution expansion is working just fine. Didn't noticed any problems in the resolutions expansion so far. It's done really properly.
