I know that, technically, USB sticks don't fall under the hard drive name, but I didn't know where else to post this.

So yeah, I'm looking for a USB 2.0 8Gb+ flash drive with decent read and write times. I can't seem to find any up to date and useful reviews on the internet. Does anybody here own or know of something that fits my requirements?

Thanks in advance.

You can't find 'any up to date and useful reviews on the internet' because the technology has hit a wall as one USB flash drive will be just as quick as any other. With USB 2 your only likely to get 34 mb's read and about 27 Mb's write, if you want speed you need to upgrade to USB 3.

usb2 aint your problem - that can do 480Mbps, or 60MBps. Problem is its hard to cram a decent controller into a package as small as a memory stick at current manufacturing nodes (never mind the face the majority of the space inside a memory stick is taken up by the flash chip anyway).

ever wondered why there aren't any usb3 memory sticks on the market yet? theres your answer.

I was looking for the same exact thing you were looking for a year back. I wanted to be able to install Linux and Win 7 of a USB stick and I was looking for a fast one myself.

I came across the USB Patriot XT Boost 200x 8GB which is much faster then a normal usb stick, it's only 15 pounds and it's rugged and the best usb stick I've ever used.

Get it, you won't regret it.

The OCZ Rally2 Turbo's are the fastest I've used. Imagine the Corsair equivalents are up there too.

USB sticks read/write slower than interface speed. On the very best ones you're looking at 30/20 sequential at the VERY best. Usually it's lower than half that.

There are, and they're loads faster than USB2 ones.

I know that I'm not going to have any massive speeds on a USB stick, but I want it to be quick at what it does. I recently returned a SanDisk cruzer I bought because it took an age to transfer the files I needed for work.

I'll have a look at the Rally and XT, thanks guys.

I've always wondered why USB flash drives and external disks are limited to about 30MB/s. I thought USB2 was 480mbps (60MB/s)?

My assumption is that the 480mbps figure is a combination of upstream/downstream bandwidth, i.e. 240mbps up and 240mbps down.

Not at all, there's still quite a difference between the 'premium' ones and the regular/generic flash drives.

oops, i take that back. in a last ditch effort to redeem myself, the couple that google came up with seem to be quite chunky and some seem to have some fancy raid trickery going on in there as opposed to quicker controllers.

My underlying point is that, its gonna be a while before this kinda stuff becomes an everyday reality.
