Need for Speed Carbon

It came out late last year so I think anything X1800/7800 or better should be able to crank the settings up high.

Put it this way, on mine I was running MW 1280x1024 4xAA 16xAF and it was more than smooth. Unless the engine has changed drastically I think it should be the same.

You need to disable vsync otherwise it is a POS FPS wise. Gfx whilst being better than the X360/PS3 versions are still a little bland as it has a washed out look and style which to me looks a backward step compared to NFSU2 even.

Game is also very poor compared to MW both graphically and gameplay wise.

Would not be a good idea to trade MW for it!!

One of the poorest console ports of recent times and laggy as hell unless you have 8800s or higher.

It might be a poor console port but I'm not so sure about it being laggy, I played through it on 640x480 at low detail because I didn't bother to change it but I've just done a couple of races at 1280x1024 (max res. of my tft) and medium details - the game was fine, not quite as quick as before obviously but a long way from being unplayable. For comparison purposes I have an A64 3400, 1gb Ram and a 6800GT. :)

I played it at 1280x1024 at relatively high settings with some AA and AF and was always over 30fps.

I have an a64 3000+, gig of ram and a 7600gt thats been overclocked a bit (well, a lot)

Well I didn't trade in MW in the end as they offered me £3 for it. I'm probably going to pop it on the MM instead at some point.

But NFS Carbon is... well... WOW! This is what MW should have been. It's really all about the racing and everything.

Are any of you running Carbon on Vista? I'm having all sorts of issues getting it going, although I found that renaming the MOVIES folder in the Carbon directory stops it crashing straight away.
However now I have no cut-scenes, so it's a bit tough to follow the story.

Oh, and my X1950XTX is going on the MM as well. I don't understand why the card can't just shut up and keep quiet as soon as I enter a game.

My Missus bought me this for Xmas! Just reinstalled it now! never really grabbed me, i thinks me may give it another shot till some new games come out.

Trust me its laggy on full detail. I game @ 1920x1200 and it is really bad unless you disable vsync then it seems fine!

I played NFS:C on an A64 3800+, 1gig PC3700 and 7900GTX level system. Performance was fine with a couple of tweaks.

As for worrying about police, as I mentioned earlier in the thread it isn't anywhere near the level of MW. I was only busted twice in the entire game of Carbon, compared to dozens of times in MW.

Er...

I can only get it to work if I do one of the following -

a) Rename the MOVIES folder to something else or delete it, however I get no cut-scenes ingame, and it's pretty hard to follow the story like this.

b) I put it into 98/Me compatibility mode, and it works, but I get random crashes.

Has anyone else with Vista had any more luck, or is it time to consider dual-booting? :(

I really wouldn't worry too much about the story, in fact I wished I could have skipped it to just get on with the racing. I'm not a 'method' racer and I don't need to get into character as it were. :)

The random crashes is one of those things that has happened to me on odd occasions when playing in XP and I assumed it was just a badly coded game so I don't think it specific to compatability mode.

Well, i've had the game for nearly a week, and er... it's really starting to annoy me now.

There are a few little niggles that I just don't like, for example the whole "Muscle/Tuner/Exotic" class thing, which means that it locks all the good cars from the two classes you don't choose. Great.

And the method of tuning a car is just plain stupid (the whole "tier" thing). I'm stuck on the final area because I have a fully tuned tier 2 car - which isn't fast enough because i'm racing against tier 3 cars. Alright, so off I go, and buy a 350Z, a tier 3 car. But, now I can't tune it, because it's a different tier, and I haven't unlocked those upgrades yet. So still, I can't win, because it's no faster than the fully tuned tier 2 car, which isn't fast enough either.

Still, it's much better than Most Wanted, which I reinstalled just to prove to myself that Carbon is indeed a massive improvement. And it took less than an hour before I was swearing at MW. It's just utter, utter crap.

Still, NFSU2 is £10. :D I think i'm just going to stick to what I like. :)

It is a bit silly but you can purchase cars from any of the classes with enough cash so aside from the very start it doesn't limit you that much.

You have to be quite aggressive in your driving if I remember rightly, I bought the Lambourghini because it was the fastest available but the principle should work whichever car you pick. I then selected the races that were for the parts upgrades and won all of them before going through to 100% the game, if you pick the races for the Pro/Race parts then you pick up speed pretty quickly. The other thing you can do is the Canyon runs and then just make sure you get in front, crash into the computer cars if necessary to put them off then all you need to do is hold onto it. :)

It does a bit, plus if i'd have known at the start that this would be the case i'd have chosen a different class.

Well because I chose muscle as my class i'm up against tuned vipers and the like, which I can't beat because of their sheer speed, however if I buy a muscle car myself I just slide all over the track.

I might just start again with a different class.

Completed this game and loved it the whole way through, now I fire it up every once in a while for a random chase by the police - can usually go on for 15 - 30 minutes depending :D
My career path was Chevy Camaro > Dodge Charger > DB9 > Shelby GT500 > Ford GT. I used the Ford GT at the end just to beat the hard guys but I'm back to using the GT500 - the engine sound is just awesome and it just torques all over the place. I don't like technology helping me through the corners - so much more effort in controlling the muscle cars as they just oversteer everywhere, but it's so much more fun.
I do use the DB9 from time to time - I'm not fond of its handling like many have said in this thread, but after installing body kit 4, the fire bellowing out of the side exhausts in front of the rear wheels when changing gear is just class :)
