Thanks Nikaz great guide. I am using wedges profile so i think its on pro at the moment so i'll knock it down to normal to get a better learning curve and im using the G27 and the flappy paddles for gear changes as i cant get used to the independant gear stick at the moment.

No problem. Glad to offer assistance.

And do you use your gears to slow down where possible?

Most definitely. You can prove it yourself. Select a track with a good straight, Road America is a good choice as it starts on a straight.
Build up speed 100mph+, pick a braking point & brake in a straight line WITHOUT changing down gears. Select Restart from the in-game menu.
Now repeat, picking the same or later braking point & brake in a straight line WHILST changing down gears.
Notice the reduced stopping distance.

Here's an explanation/breakdown of mastering corners I posted earlier in this thread. It's purpose is to emphasise how important it is to get good corner entry.

The 'Perfect Corner'.

The perfect corner is taken with the smallest amount of steering possible i.e. straightening the corner as much as possible.

To achieve this 'Perfect Corner' you'll need the following:

Braking point
Turn-in point
Add Steering Angle
Apex - Hold Steering Angle & throttle
Turn-out point
Remove Steering Angle
Throttle point
Exit point

Bear in mind that all takes place in a split second.

Out brake yourself (we've all done this) into a corner even very slightly & you've screwed the perfect corner straight away.
You've missed the braking point, thus you have:
1. missed the turn-in (more steering angle needed)
2. missed the apex (unintentionally created a tighter corner)
3. missed turn-out point (holding steering & throttle longer than necessary)
4. missed throttle point (late getting on the gas)
5. missed exit point (compromised speed/position on track)

Get everything right up to point 3 & you've screwed 4 & 5 as well. That's not as bad. So you see why were told slow-in fast out. It's better to make a good corner entry to minimise error count.

This is near to impossible to achieve on a one lap basis. If it were easy we'd all have matching lap times.

What is needed is practise steering in ONCE on entry to a corner then holding that position (no sheering/sawing at the wheel), steering out ONCE on corner exit.

Every time you make a major adjustment to the steering you're creating another corner. This compromises your speed through the corner.

A good reference point to use is tyre noise. Minimise that intermittent screeching around a corner.

Bit quicker but it's getting hard now. I know 14's are achievable but I'm losing my concentration. Going to have a play on the NFSWorld beta thing which ends tomorrow - over to you Nick!

<snip>

Great time Dan.
I'll give it a go but I don't hold up much hope of getting in the 14's

I don't suppose any of you are racing on a pad? :p

I don't have room for a wheel atm, even if I wanted one and managing any kind of smooth cornering is proving near impossible it's either understeering way off line or skidding, the AI cars are fine :(

Perhaps I just need to practice more... :p

I am having the same problem. Very difficult to make smooth turns.

I use the xbox360 pad as does inam22 & I'm sure a few others do too

Ignore that^ watched merlin5 video again and it explained all :D

Do you guys use default cars or buy them then mod/tune them?
Basically, towards the end of each week a nomination is made for the following week. The Nominee may select a Car that is;
'Stock', 'Reward' or 'Loaner' which cannot be upgraded or tuned.

'Works Converted' which means the car must be purchased (if you haven't already done so) & fully upgraded to 'Works' spec. These can be tuned. Don't worry too much about tuning, we'll all help in this area.

If the nominee just states a Car, then anything goes, you can upgrade as little or as much as you want & tuning is allowed.

Congratulations Dan. Excellent time

Well done Ultim8. You've knocked 10+ secs off your laptime in a few days. Good going.

Hey guys. I'm trying to do this with the 360 pad, and I've just picked up the game, but after a few laps I'm still a good 5 sec off the pace. My car is drifting around every corner, it's near impossible to take a corner fast and cleanly. As soon as I steer the car seems to pivot on its centre and drift.

I'm using the settings posted above for the pad. I'm really fast in GRID, but this is totally different.

Welcome Alex.
If you're using the 'Normal' setting for 'Driving Model' then make sure you've 'Steering Assist' & 'Braking Assist' set to OFF. With these two settings ON the game steers & brakes for you, which is a no no.
What car view do you play with? I personally can't use the 'Behind Car' view which gives the impression of the car pivoting on it's centre as you describe. Bonnet or In-Car view are best with this game.

A very quick guide to this track with my settings.

T-1 - (This assumes your second lap) Drop from 6th to 2nd. The trick to this corner is turning in later than you think you should. Oh, remember to brake hard in a straight line & come off the brakes as you start your turn-in.

T-2 - If you have taken T-1 with good line & speed you should be snatching 5th just before the braking point. Drop to 3rd & hold a throttle position to stay on the racing line. Don't stray to wide otherwise you comprise the line for the double apex sweeping left taken in 3rd all the way round. Again try & hold a steady steering position.

T-3 - Bumpy hairpin. I drop to 1st for this corner but can be taken in 2nd. On exit try & use as much of the track as poss to straighten the curve.

T-4 - Long left hairpin. Taken in 3rd. You're looking for a constant 94-96 mph round this bend.

T-5 - Left turn at brow of hill. On approach I'm in 4th, braking just before red lining where the tarmac turns dark. Drop to 2nd & wait till you see the downhill section prior to maxing your revs.

T-6 - If you had good exit out of T-5 you'll be dropping to 3rd from 5th. The camber here is in your favour so make sure you hit the apex whilst flooring 3rd gear.
Stay in 3rd for the next right, left complex

T-7 - OFF camber right turn. I enter in 3rd dropping to 2nd as the line turns red, feathering the throttle to stay as wide as poss to straighten the next simple turn, the uphill right kink. I change upto 3rd as I ride the left curb.

T-8 - Stay in 3rd again try & stay on the line with a little throttle control.

T-9 - Uphill right, left leading to Start/ Finish. I stay in 3rd only changing up to 4th once I've cleared this section.

My settings do require you to straighten the car mid turn in some situations, sort of counter steering but not in an aggressive manner. You're just trying to keep the rear in check to maintain forward momentum. Just a little warning
