^ Need for Speed Shift ^

hmmmm

It plays very odd - the deadzones and sensitivities just won't go far enough. Only the last third of the trigger is used for accelerating regardless of values it seems and this is the main culprit of the oversteer thing - it's virtually impossible to apply part throttle so as to gradually accelerate out of a corner.

Similar with the steering, absolutely nothing you set gives you the ability to steer smoothly and gently.

It's playable from the bonnet cam or in car but as soon as you watch the replay you find you've pretty much drifted the entire lap.

Needs patching/modding IMO to sort the controls properly.

edit - this is with a 360 controller btw

I have to agree with Kenai. I'm getting the hang of it, and am able to finish a race now, but it's just constant tire squeal, and if I try and ease off, I just have no throttle at all.

The game is almost there. The graphics are awesome, and the sounds and cockpit view are all very immersive. The handling has the right aspects, you can't go speeding into corners, and you have to use your weight shifting etc., but it just doesn't seem to all work together. This is most likely down to the controls as has already been said. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Also, is anyone getting there 360 pad spazzing out when vibration is enabled? If I try and have it enabled the pad lights up the top left and bottom right lights, and my car smashes into a wall bouncing of the limiter while my view is pointing up and to the right. Works fine if I disable FF.

Personally, I prefer GRID though they are very different. GRID I think has decent enough arcade handling, you can at least go around corner without powersliding if you try and drive properly. In Shift you seem to either powerslide or you have to go 5mph.

Need to get my wheel out - job for tomorrow - but am enjoying it with the keyboard just to try it out.

Obviously I have driving aids on, and it does seem pretty tail happy - but there's a marked difference once you start to upgrade the cars - I won't be able to tell properly though til I put my wheel on.

I have a decent rig, but good performance with all the bells n whistles turned on and no issues with loading between races - maybe that's the SSDs helping?

Anyway initial verdict is that it looks good as an arcade racer, definitely not a sim or anywhere close, but in comparison to GRID you tend to have a few more options, cars, tracks, upgrades etc to start with.

Oh that was one thing I meant to mention - loading performance was excellent for me with a mid range 640GB Caviar Blue hard drive. Cars appeared in about 2 seconds at most, tracks loaded in about 10-15 seconds. Nothing like the 'longer to load than race' experience others have.

Mine is running really, really slowly on my 4870X2!

Anyone got issues with performance?

If you read back a few pages, it seems a lot of ATi users are having issues, so it's probably that.

On a different note: Are people using FRAPS or something for screenshots or is there are an inbuilt button?

Printscreen is just grabbing a shot of my desktop behind the game with a black square in the corner...

aye fraps is good for taking screenshots/pictures or making videos whilst in replay mode ..

I get amazing performance on my 4850. 2aa and 1920x1080. It's slightly dips but it was running really smooth. No AF though I'll try it with AF.

Edit - Well tried it with 4aa and 16 af, didn't seem to drop in performance for me... I was driving fast and crashing about the place no frame drops I could feel. This was the demo.

It's a bit laggy on the 3870 O.o Everything on medium and 4aa with low af. I wasn't expecting to be able to run everything on full but wasn't expecting to having to lower everything down to this level :P

I tied the demo and it looks ok but the game is undrivable with my G25, this happens with all console conversions grid, tocca ect. There seems to be some lag or dead zone that carn't be removed.

I'll stick to sim racing it's much easier.
