^ Need for Speed Shift ^

Just bought NFS Shift, seems like it will be a great game!

Not having any problems with steering or throttle linearity, seems perfectly controllable on an wired 360 controller.

Looking forward to putting a few hours in over the weekend.

I presume you must have changed the default settings because the defaults are terrible - 33% steering deadzone? :p

Indeed I did, turned it down to about 10% which seems good.

The game seems to be progressing well so far, I've only just started racing the tier 3 races but tier 4 is already open, drifting is an absolute pain in the bum, really not getting the hang of it :(

I have tried the drifting events and also found it very awkward to drift, compared to other racing games. It is much better implemented in other games I can think of like NFS Underground, Carbon & ProStreet, Codemasters GRID and Juiced 2.

I find the handling good on the PC.
360 Controller.

Steering dead Zone 5
Acceleration dead Zone 5
breaking dead Zone 5

Steering sensitivity 0
Acceleration sensitivity 0
breaking sensitivity 0

Speed Steering sensitivity 0

I'm having similar issues on PC, oversteer everywhere, no throttle modulation. I'm playing with a 360 pad. Total showstopper for me as the game is impossible to enjoy like this.

im playing it on a keyboard fine with the arrow keys upto tier 4 and i can still control the super cars enough to win races oval sucks though as i slide a bit to much on the corners and lose a lot of speed but i finished 2nd on the 30lap one (managed to be in first place quite a bit)

^^^I agree drifting is hard unless you are in the right car/event. However Juiced 2 almost takes it too far to the other extreme, you are basically just blasting round at a 90degree+ angle most of the time.

Just jumped from level 27 to level 30 in one race! Llevel 27-30 in the 3 lap Nordschleife (Nurburgring) endurance race. Fastest lap was 7mins 18seconds in a Nissan GT-R Works.

Is this worth picking up for £7.50?

Also, what are the multiplayer options?

Can you have 2 mates in a season online?

Also, does the game feature pit stops online?

Many Thanks.

It's not too bad for £7.50

Not sure about the online stuff as I never bothered with that, but I don't remember pit stops of any form in single player races.

The handling model is what makes or breaks this game really, I never truly gelled with it. It's manageable but to me the cars always felt wrong, more like they pivoted from the middle rather than steered from the front.

When I got Forza 3 a few weeks later, it was like night and day how much better Forza felt. It's not the Shift is too arcade or too sim, it just feels kinda... wrong.

I think Shift tried to emphasise the feel over and above everything else, the noise, the sense of speed etc.

It has more depth than GRID but personally, i'd be hard pushed to call it a sim like GTR. Neither would I put it in the middle of them either, it seems almost more like a separate branch entirely.

This is probably not the best video to show it but I think kinda demonstrates the point i've been trying to make with the handling.

Everytime he steers, watch the angle of the car, it's almost as if the back end turns out just as much as the front turns in and this happens on every car, FWD, RWD, 4WD... handling mods may fix it, I don't know really, I stopped playing before I ever bothered to put effort into finding the best mods.

it's a great game if you spend time with it, graphically it still holds it own amongst the plethora of racing games out there but the handling seemed to be a 'marmite' situation.

Dunker's video's are superb and show how realistic the gfx and playability are portrayed, so I'd advise having a watch and if you like racing games that require some practice it's worth grabbing on the cheap.
