Hi guys,

I want to upgrade my graphics card from a ASUS ATi X800XL 256MB GDDR3 for something better. I've been having a look at the website and I have put my eyes on two of them:

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Extreme SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 VIVO HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-065-PC) (£187.99 Including VAT at 17.5%)

or

OcUK MSI GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-041-OK) £180

So, which one would you get? The rest of my rig is : Athlon X2 4800+ S939, 2GB DDR400 Corsair Value, MSI Neo4 (NForce4 Ultra), 19" Samsung TFT Monitor.

Thanks for the help in advance!

sorry tis just that i thought a lot of fan dumping would happen, you know DX10/G80 and all that...

both cards are good, with the 7900gto having the edge slightly in terms of speed... but the x1950pro having slightly better image quality... both are fine cards...

Well if you have £180 to spend (in my opinion), hold onto your cash and wait for the G80 prices to drop or till you can afford one. You will cry (like me) when you spend £180 for a new card and then realise later in the year you will have to upgrade your card again when more dx10 titles hit the shelves.

Waiting a year, just for a GFX Card is Useless IMO.

Technology changes, you can't just keep waiting for new stuff to be released, If you did you would end up not actually buying anything ! :p

Have to upgrade??????????? what a load of bull! you dont have to do anything of the kind, your still looking at 6 months till there are 2 or 3 games that even use dx10!

I'm not forcing anyone to do any upgrade - it's just a suggestion. There will no doubt be titles that are being made right now for dx10 that will creep up.

Remember the G80 is fastest in dx9 and futureproof.

Nobody has to do anything of course,I am just suggesting.

But you said, and i quote " You will cry (like me) when you spend £180 for a new card and then realise later in the year you will HAVE to upgrade your card again when more dx10 titles hit the shelves."

Last time i checked dx10 games also work with dx9 cards.

The fact of the matter is that everyone wants G80 because they think it will blitz everything dx9 not becuase it has dx10.

Just thought it'd be an idea to ask the spec of your PC and as such, whether you're on AGP or PCI-E?

Pci Express at a guess seeing as he has suggested 2 pci express cards :) in my humple opion which doesnt really count for much i would go for the 7900GTO mmmmmm quiet!

Yeah I know he suggested two PCI-E cards, hence my curiosity as to whether his PC is actually PCI-E or not. Also coming from an X800XL, his PC could be pretty dated making a 7900GTO (which would be my preference) not only overkill, but a victim of severe cpu/memory bottlenecking.

Valid point, but AGP is rather dated and ATI and Nvidia still relaese brand new spanking super fast graphics cards for that.

To the OP:

If you can, stretch the extra £20 and get one of the X1900XT 512MB cards from the clearance section of the site.

Ignore the Dx10 brigade, they should be returning to their mum's basements soon. :)
