Need help with an upgrade from a X800XL

Hi again!

Well, I posted my specs before, but here they are again:

Athlon X2 4800+ S939, 2GB DDR400 Corsair Value, MSI Neo4 (NForce4 Ultra), 19" Samsung TFT Monitor.

As you can imagine is PCI Express and its only for playing at 1280x1024.

Anyway thanks for the help. Seems that the 7900GTO is faster than the X1950 Pro for what you are saying!

<Listens for the stampede of Anti G80 Fanboys who say a 7900GTO is overkill for that resolution because even a 7600GT can play ANY game maxed>

Just an option that will save you £40-£50 but have you looked at the x1800xt 256mb @ £140???
Ok it lacks the extra memory of the other two you've listed but at that res it doesn't make any difference. Mine runs all the games I throw at it fully maxed out at that res. I'm pretty sure benchmarks puts it right up there with those other 2 cards.
 
Well, I want something future proof (or at least 3 month future proof!! :D) as I am planning to get Supremme Comander and thats why I am upgrading :)

I could also wait until the game comes out and then buy. But waiting is a thing I do not do well.
 
what a bugger!

I have just discovered thos ATI X1900XTX 512 on the clearance section for £205 ... Are they really that noisy? I am worried because the fan on my good ol' X800XL was very noisy! :(

So, what do you recommend? nVidia 7900GTO or ATi X1900XTX 512?

Well if you want quiet, then get the GTO, its a stonking card for the price, as its actually really a fully fledged 7900 GTX, which is on par with the x1900 XTX 512mb, but it costs less. :)

Ah well, back on topic; I would go for the 7900GTO 256MB or the X1900XT 256MB. If you can stretch to £205 though the X1900XT 512MB can be had, and nothing in that price-range can touch it (especially if you play Oblivion or games from the Battlefield series.)

The X1900XT cards are louder than the 7900GTO, but they're nowhere near as loud as people make out. It depends on your tastes really: Silence = 7900GTO, Speed = X1900XT. Both overclock fantastically.

I might like to point out that on a few games I've purchased lately the 256MB of RAM on my x800gto2 has been a limiting factor. Many games to run textures on the high setting require 512MB of graphics card RAM. Might and Magic is a good example, as is NWN 2 and I'm sure the upcoming Supreme Commander which the OP wants to upgrade for will require it for the best quality.
 
Woah ...

A friend of mine has told me that the IQ of the ATi cards is much better than nVIDIA and that I will notice the difference from my X800XL to the 7900GTO.

Is it really that bad?

Umm as far as I know it's not. I'm not as bad a stickler for IQ as some others on these Forums but I noticed no difference at all from a 7800GTX to X1800XT. But the general concensus is that there is a noteable difference.
 
Do you know any websites that do IQ reviews between ATi and Nvidia?

I have always been very please with ATi IQ quality but then again the graphics cards I have had in the past have been a little bit wierd :

GeForce 420 Go from my laptop
Kyro II 64 MB
S3 Savage 2000 32 MB
Intel I740 8 MB

Goot article, shame it's silly though (at least the COD2 comparison, I didn't read much further.)

Anyone with Firefox or Opera can pull up the first two COD2 pics in two different tabs and flip between them, or seperate windows in IE etc. The difference is unmistakable, and yet FiringSquad for some reason chose to ignore it. The texturing on the road and broken wall is noticably worse on the Nvidia part, and the Nvidia part has an odd white ghosting (especially all down the left-hand side.)

I compared those two pics then noticed they were comparing daft little things and ignoring the obvious differences, so I stopped reading. :) When I compare IQ, I compare a full image without zooming in. If something is noticably worse without zooming in then you have your answer as to which card has better IQ.

Well, to be honest, I had a look at the article, looking at the pics closely and the differences where minimal! :)

So 7900GTO is then :D
