Hi,
In September i bought a PC from Overclockers which has been great. I bought the computer without a gfx card as I didn't have the money at the time but now at christmas i do and so bought the Palit GTS 250 1gb green which has been recommended as a great card.

Im new to installing cards but my mate told me it's like high tech lego so i had a go and it is pretty easy. However, there wasnt enough room for the card because the plastic was so thick but i can fix that by cutting it. The real problem is that when i put the gfx card in there is a slot to put in the PCI express cable , which is this
http://www.cable-trader.co.uk/images/items/PCI Express 4 pin to 6 pin power adapter.jpg

So i put the black end of the cable into the gfx card but then i dont know where to put the white end. I have been researching this for like half a day and the other end is meant to somehow connect to the power supply ive been told. The problem is there is no wire in the PC that connects to the PCI express cable from the power supply.

Is this because i had no gfx card previously in my PC?
Does anyone know where i can get the part to connect the pci cable to the power supply?
Really need some help It's all appreciated.
Thanks a lot, Matt.
(I can paste pics or anything if that would help) x

I think its the power connector that i need. My power supply doesnt have one coming out of it. Do i need to buy one? if so could you link one?
Really appreciate the help, thanks.

I think ill have to cut the card theres nothing else i can do other than getting a smaller one. My mate has the exact same pc and card but bought his pc with the card fitted and his is cut, but obviously by a proffesional ;p

Thanks for help

DO NOT CUT YOUR NEW GPU - there should be no need to and if you do you can probably wave goodbye to any warranty that came with it.:(

A picture or 2 of the 'problem' areas (card and motherboard) might enable myself or others to assist you in avoiding this action :)

Turning to the cable picture you have provided the best way I can think of explaining why you presumambly got one in the box with your new Gpu is :-

Graphics cards sometimes need more power than the PcI e slot (where the card fits) in the motherboard can supply and if they do they will have a plug in point at the rear of the card . Such rear connector will usually have a 6 pin or 8 pin profile (and some cards have both or 2x6pin etc).

From the cable picture you have provided for your new card to run correctly it needs the power from a 6 pin connector .

PSU's come with different power connectors. The most commen are Molex connectors - the two white connectors on your picture.

Most good quality PSU's will have at least one 6/8 pin connector but some do not or do not have enough SO the alternative, which will hopefully work, is to look to convert 2 of the PSU's molex connectors (most psu's have a good few and at least 2 will be available) to the 6 pin power connector that you need - as per the cable picture you provided.

So using the cable you plug 2 of the PSU's molex connectors into the 2 white molex connectors on the cable and plug the 'new' six pin connector into the card (Plug into the card AFTER you have installed it into the motherboard)

BE careful though do not overload your psu or ......!:(:( so before you go ahead, would suggest you you provide spec of PSU your using and what you have connected to it ; also details of the motherboard would be helpfull- not an expert myself but others here can and hopefully will help :)

BTW I assume from what you have written that the computer you bought has been running sinse September , which implies some form of onboard graphics solution; if this is the case just check your manuals to see if there is anything you need to do to ensure that your motherboard uses the 'new' card (once installed) and not the existing on-board graphics.- I do not have any personal experience of 'on-board' graphics use but the bits I've read appear to say that most boards automatically will see a new gpu card , run from that and turn of the on-board graphics BUT I'm not sure that this applies to every board

I hope the above helps

Hey mate thanks a lot for the above information, ive got pics here hope they help:

Thats the graphics card - Its got a slot for the 6 pin cable, which i put in but then i dont know where to put the two white ends.

This is my power supply, Ive took pics of the sockets, the white ends of the pcie cable wont fit anywhere in here, does that mean i need some sort of adapter cable??

Heres another pic of the Power supply sockets

So all together i have my gfx card, the pcie wire which i linked in my first post and my power supply which ive linked in thist post. Really just need to know how i get it working, becasue i cant seem to fit the white end of the pcie wire into the power supply sockets theyre not the right shape, i need sum kind of adapter or something.

Thanks agedidiot for your help and appreciate it from everyone cheers. If i find out how to do this ill paste pics of my motherboard to see an alternative for cutting the card,
THANKS a lot. x

You've got a modular PSU, meaning you should have cables that came with the powersupply, one end of the cable should plug into your PSU, then along that length of cable should be multiple connectors, which should fir that PCI-E power connector you linked to in your first post.

Thanks a lot mate =] Im home from University for christmas and i think ive left all cables that came with the pc at my flat so they should be there. I was actually thinking it could be something like that. But just incase they arent there can i buy this cable? If so could you link
Thanks very much everyone for your fast replies, if you lived where i was I'd buy you all a pint :P
x

Lol, I'm alright for a drink anyways, liver is currently recovering after a solid week of drinking, have to prepare for new years.

As for new cables, it would depend on what PSU you have whether or not you could order more. can't you nip to your flat to pick them up instead? May be easier and quicker, know you students probably don't go back for ages yet :p.

Alrite thanks a lot =] can i just ask aswell above people have told me not to cut the graphix card, how can i fit it in without doing this. If you look at my last picture i posted the orange cable on the left handside is plugged in and since the graphic card is so wide, it wont fit. The only way around it i can see is cutting the black plastic which wont do anything to the card or the fan and the card fits in perfectly. Also the warranty stickers is still on the back XD

If you can see an alternative please say, thanks. If you want betetr pics ill get some. Thanks again

I cant really nip back to the flat as im going skiing in a couple of days, if anyone could link me to a site where i could get the cable ghosteh is talking about id be very greatful, just incase the cables not there when i get back

Cheers.

I'm also guessing you've got a Corsair 450w, and I've had a quick Google but can't see anywhere that offer just the cables. If you do get desperate you could contract Corsair directly, see what they say I suppose.

Yeah its a S-ATA Cable but there isnt any other ports on the motherboard, so i guess cutting it is the only option ?? My mate has the same pc with the same graphics card but he bought it off overclockers with it already in, when i looked in his pc it was cut so not sure what to do ;o

Anyone, maybe you Ghosteh got a pic of that cable you were talking about earlier that i should have in my flat?

Thanks a lot guys x

Would a longer Sata cable solve the problem? - Always assuming that you can get one long enough

They are easy to find and pretty cheap.

So far as your psu is concerned I think it's the one I've linked below and the connectors are all listed under the resources tab - third one down of which there should be 2.(p.s. the Molex connectors (not needed now) are the 5th on the list)

Thanks for he idea but its the socket the Sata cable goes into - when i attempt to put the gfx card in it just wont cos the socket is in the way which is soldered to to the motherboard and theres no other sata sockets :/

Cheers for the help
