Need some good single player games

You can install from the disk, it just needs to activate on steam. There will be updates of course but especially, if you just install one game at a time, they won't be that big.

Last time i installed MW:2, Steam downloaded an 800MB+ update.

Worth noting if your using a PAYG connection.

i really enjoyed dragonage, freelancer (ancient but awesome) i suppose crysis is well worth a playthrough for the eyecandy but you wont be maxing it out on a 5770 so i suppose that rules that out. still looks darn decent turned down though, i much enjoyed cod4 SP and the assassins creeds, i suggest the first one (A because it makes sense to play 1 first and B because you dont need the always on net connection) the half-life games are all good too

How many off the games mentioned in this thread have to go through Steam? I've just tried to install it yet it always sticks on 48% when it's updating. What a pile of cack. It's enough to put me off PC gaming altogether.

edit//
Now get a message saying 'cannot connect to Steam network'.

Steam does to do very occasionally. Servers might be getting hit hard with the weekend deals. Keep trying, it is worth it.

Just don't fancy paying £15 for every 3GB I download really.

Cheers guys. I've seen Crysis is only around a fiver brand new. is that worth a go? MW2 is one that's been on my list. I'm not familiar with 'The Witcher'. I'll check it out now.
You can still buy the retail CD :).

You can get the Orange Box on DVD, highly recommended. You might want to disable automatic updating for Team Fortress 2 as the update is around 5+ GB.

If you are on O2, Steam is blocked according to Google.

This. If you can find the Orange Box on DVD, it might be worth buying if you don't want to download :) It's around £15 on a certain jungle based website. Cheaper than it is on Steam!

I wouldnt bother with crysis on a 5700 card, unless you want to run it at lowish settings, its still a monster game to run these days.

You're joking right? Copes absolutely fine. I play with high settings, bit of AA and get consistant framerates at 1920x1200.

Isn't there a massive update on Steam though? One reviewer said it was around a 20GB update! Or does it let you install everything from the DVD?

dead space (played it on PS3 however. Great fun, cant beat stamping the limbs off the living dead)
Far Cry - classic and geat story line
Borderlands was a fun levelling up game - loved playing as Mordecai with the bloodwing
Orange Box - if you can get in on disc (plus portal 2 is on the horizon)
MW and MW2 - I also found the single player good (bit short but still good to play)
Fear
STALKER
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter

Freespace 2 and freelancer for space games

Any of the COD games for the epic single players for FPS

FEAR, AVP marine campaign, Oblivion, jedi knight 2 jedi knight/jedi academy also worth a mention.

The command and conquer games (avoiding C&C4 though) plus medievil total war 2 for RTS single player. Oh and Dawn of War 1/2 for single player also, both superb.

Cheers for the suggestions guys.

I'll order Bioshock, Oblivion, Assassin's Creed and Crysis sometime this week. I've shopped around and can get them all for around £25 with a possible 8% cashback as well! :)

May also pick up Call Of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. I've seen it for just over £10. Can you just confirm that none of the games in this post need to mess around with Steam or have any annoying DRM?
