a good diet will do you well, if that needs to include shakes then so be it. doing a proper bulk (im not talking a lean bulk!) might not be the best thing just yet.

As Morba says above :) Years ago protein shakes used to be made up of all kinds of rubbish and generally were not of a great quality. Today they're excellent and they will do you no harm at all when taken in conjuction with a clean, balanced diet. Concentrate on improving your diet and then look into supplementation if you feel you're lacking.

You're welcome to post a general days eating for yourself on here for us all to mull over.

What tripe, ancient warrior races started training boys from 8 and younger. They were hardly stunted or weak.

The key factor here is simple, form, good diet, and no over-training. No he shouldn't be following an intensive, heavy wear routine. But there's nothing wrong with lifting now.

Oh, however, whilst at your age you'll probably be lucky enough to see quite a lot of lean muscle growth with little fat gain, it won't last forever. Understand that an excess of calories is required to gain any real muscle.

There's a wealth of information here and on many other forums and sites, make sure you read up well before you start. Also, ensure that you have someone who REALLY knows what they're doing to spot your form and keep in in line. Finally, never forget that the three keys to good, safe body building; diet, workout, rest. Each is as important as the other. And don't overtrain. Warmup well, stretch long, go easy :)

There is no correctly. Bulking at that age is wrong. It'll pressure certain areas of the body too much and cause problems in later life.

Too much of anything is bad at that age - impact cardio, extensive/incorrect weights sessions... you can do some real damage.

What? Done correctly it will strengthen muscle, encourage growth, and create a greater base for bodybuilding later in life.

Too much of anything is bad at ANY age. Control is the key, and there's nothing wrong with him beginning to bulk now.

Chong, how tall are you?

And how this can be even slightly relevant is utterly, utterly beyond me.

You've actually answered a lot of your own questions here :)
How can doctors know jack when they spend their time helping people who have caused serious long term damage to themselves from working out at the gym at an age too early? It annoys me when people say "Doctors don't know anything" when Doctors are the people who see the result day in/day out!

This is exactly it, the point being made is that Doctors aren't bodybuilders, they aren't sports therapists or scientists, they are not personal trainers. They are people who deal with a variety of illnesses and injuries, and for the most part, see only the negative side to body building.

That chance is much larger with younger people who have not finished growing.
Why is it?

but I'd say developing bodies are much more susceptible to long term damage through the misuse of machinery.
So actually, you don't know.

was that to anyone in particular? most of the posts in this thread are agreeing with what you have said :p

you do notice among people in their early 20's that those who started lifitng weights and pursuing other intensive physical activities at a young age are all stunted dwarves. whereas those who have very wisely not partaken of that physical exertion are all sculpted like greek gods.

Suppose bulking and weight lifting and what not at 15 kinda could mess with your growth maybe? your bone growth etc.

Im 18 and 6"3 and big so don't think I can stunt anything :D.

He say's that he does running. So if he does quite a bit of it and tries to bulk, a lot of you experts at this say that it would interfere. Just make the process of bulking slower? or something else?

Personally at that age when you are just about to get into a bit of weight training, Shakes are completely unnecessary.

When you have been doing it a bit more, fair enough but when you first start, absolutely no need for them.

Make sure you have a well balanced diet and that will go a long way.
