Nehalem / X58...

looking forward to seeing these cpu , mb getting released , my next big upgrade maybe have 16 gb memory on the mb at ddr3 "prices permitting" and windows vista 64 bit.

thanks for the info guys / girls :-)

hopefully the on-die memory controller will help against latency, instead of masking the problem with crazy amounts of L2 cache like in the current yorkfields.

i also think triple channel seems a bit wrong, quadruple channel would be a lot better. i couldnt get round buying 3 sticks of RAM having been used to buying 2 or 4, it just doesnt seem right...maybe i'll get used to it...

ill wait around for this to upgrade my ageing opty 146. crossfire should be supported too i presume.

As long as intels Yields are ok, they should clock pretty well, but its anyones guess at this point. That said, aandtech have said that the 2.66 is faster than a Penryn 3.2Ghz when both chips are at stock, so its going to be quick no matter what.

I dont care how many slots it has.. but with 6 slots in triple channel, it will be fairly inexpensive to set up a rig with 12gb of memory :)

that the new intel cooler, looks like its going to be loud :p

Sweet, I know what my next PC is going to have in it :D

Apparently the difference between Core 2 Duo and Nehalem is the same as it was between Pentium 4 and Core 2 Duo, so we should see a nice big improvement.

Hopefully they keep the prices decent.

If I decide to hold out till Q1 2009 with my P4 Prescott,

i'm going P4 -> Nehalem!! Woohoo!

The Extreme Edition will be around £1K ($1360) as Intel seem to think this is the correct price for such a high end part thats why the QX9770 is around £900-999 now (if you look around).

No competition from AMD means they will launch around this pricepoint only reason they did some £6-700 XE models was to gain mark share and hurt AMD more.

I'm looking forward to this too - and with a couple of manufacturers starting to roll our 4Gb sticks... ooooooo... that would make for one awesome ramdisk!

I'm going from nothing -> not extreme nehalem!

Wouldnt pay no more than £500 and wouldn't want to pay that much to be honest.

RoEy

Really can't see Nehalem supporting DDR2 and DDR3 tbh. With an onboard memory controller it'd take too much space to provide both types of controller.

What might happen is they produce lower end versions later (Celerons?) with a DDR2 controller instead.
