The Radio Times used to publish viewing figure stats, and I remember Neighbours having EIGHTEEN MILLION daily viewers at one point. No, that isn't a typo, it was comfortably in the top10 most watched shows at its peak (remember back then there was only 4 TV channels, no freeview or internet etc). The pedant in me hated the fact it was advertised as a 17:35 start but would actually start around 17:37 (funny the little details like that one remembers).
37 years is really good going to be honest for a non-primetime soap.
Like quite a few others in this thread it seems, as a kid growing up I had a crush on quite a few of the cast. In the pre-Hollyoaks days there really wasn't much totty about in soaps, you'd have the odd 'attractive-ish' one in Emmerdale Farm or whatever but honestly you were feeding on scraps in them days except for Neighbours with Lucy, Beth, Annalise, Sarah etc. I think Melissa Bell (Lucy) was my first crush when was 11 or whatever, in hindsight she was OK but nothing stunning like some of the ones that followed.
I also remember early 90s being quite invested in the storylines, the car crash mentioned above seemed pretty bad at the time but I'm sure would be laughable watching today, there was also stuff like Paul Robinson being in debt, winning loads in the casino to finally end his woes and then getting mugged on the way out (the chances!). The love-triangle thing with Lucy, Brad and Beth, Lassiters getting burned down, Henry Ramsay being a loveable guy but totally hapless (cringeworthy at times), that kind of initial annoyed feeling when new families move in (e.g. Kennedys) but then over time growing to appreciate some of the characters etc.
When I was in Melbourne I went to a Neighbours theme night where you could meet a few of the cast, but I hadn't watched the show for probably 7(?) years by that point so the likes of Elle and Stingray didn't do much for me (although the latter seemed a decent bloke). Paul Robinson was the only 'proper' one and let's be honest he's probably delivered the same patter to brit holidaymakers a thousand times so it wasn't that memorable.
