Neighbours axed

I think she got killed off soon after. Hit by a car.

One thing I noticed which surprised me, it shouldn't really, is how many of the 'Australian' soap stars were actually born in the UK. The woman who played Daphne, Elaine Smith, was born in Ayrshire, Scotland.

It's sad that Neighbours is going. I watched it from the start. Then missed it for a few years. Then recently got back in to it.

I can see that many of the storylines seem to repeat. At one time most people in the street had dated each other. It was becoming repetative. It's probably the only soap in history entirely funded by a different country than it is filmed and hosted in.

Didnt she also get electrocuted at one stage? Or was that another character?

Great news, this show is like some kind of Conservative propaganda, everyone is ripped and good looking and they all live in million pound houses despite not being rich. Whether it is worse now than in the 80s I don't know but it doesn't have the charm of Corrie or Emmerdale.

From what I recall it wasn't like that back in the day, hence its popularity. Over here you had Coronation St, Eastenders, Emmerdale (Which i remember had significantly lost popularity) and Brookside. Other than that it was American stuff like Dynasty etc. It was a suburb of Melbourne, people were not ripped and often not good looking (Joe Mangle/Lou Carpenter) and there were often generations of family(Robinsons/Mitchells) or couples living there(Des was a bank manager and his missus was a stripper so probably had decent wages between them). It was extremely popular and although in a different time slot altogether than UK soaps I believe the viewing figures were up there and possibly surpassed UK Soaps. I also guess that it could have been that popular because what you consider "charm" may be seen as depressing and not the escapism most people want to watch when they get home from work. Then again, what do i know? I havnt watched terrestrial tv for over 15 years and that was Hollyoaks

Brookside was pretty decent. I remember the Simon character and his cult. Spooky stuff.

LOL Dont think i ever watched a single episode, i do remember someone getting buried under the patio tho. I also recall Eldorado being about at similar era that was apparently dire.

I did used to watch Hollyoaks for a while then stopped then started watching again for a while and then all the stupid stuff happened, the crash at the wedding and the Final Destination style accident that killed a load of the students off was hilarious.. Oh and the skydiving incident!:cry::cry: Oh and the hot female teacher boning the student lad

The Radio Times used to publish viewing figure stats, and I remember Neighbours having EIGHTEEN MILLION daily viewers at one point. No, that isn't a typo, it was comfortably in the top10 most watched shows at its peak (remember back then there was only 4 TV channels, no freeview or internet etc). The pedant in me hated the fact it was advertised as a 17:35 start but would actually start around 17:37 (funny the little details like that one remembers).

37 years is really good going to be honest for a non-primetime soap.

Like quite a few others in this thread it seems, as a kid growing up I had a crush on quite a few of the cast. In the pre-Hollyoaks days there really wasn't much totty about in soaps, you'd have the odd 'attractive-ish' one in Emmerdale Farm or whatever but honestly you were feeding on scraps in them days except for Neighbours with Lucy, Beth, Annalise, Sarah etc. I think Melissa Bell (Lucy) was my first crush when was 11 or whatever, in hindsight she was OK but nothing stunning like some of the ones that followed.

I also remember early 90s being quite invested in the storylines, the car crash mentioned above seemed pretty bad at the time but I'm sure would be laughable watching today, there was also stuff like Paul Robinson being in debt, winning loads in the casino to finally end his woes and then getting mugged on the way out (the chances!). The love-triangle thing with Lucy, Brad and Beth, Lassiters getting burned down, Henry Ramsay being a loveable guy but totally hapless (cringeworthy at times), that kind of initial annoyed feeling when new families move in (e.g. Kennedys) but then over time growing to appreciate some of the characters etc.

When I was in Melbourne I went to a Neighbours theme night where you could meet a few of the cast, but I hadn't watched the show for probably 7(?) years by that point so the likes of Elle and Stingray didn't do much for me (although the latter seemed a decent bloke). Paul Robinson was the only 'proper' one and let's be honest he's probably delivered the same patter to brit holidaymakers a thousand times so it wasn't that memorable.

9pm for a day time soap?

Its post watershed so hopefully it's a bit naughty. I want to see karl end Susan over only to be caught by harold and Lou who start doing each other as well.

It definitely had its run. Good memories getting home after school and oh how it fed into my teenage boy dreams, christ, some of the actresses they had on there.

Then during my uni days where my female friend and I would ‘watch neighbours’. Post episode was always fun :D

I keep asking my Nan "has anyone from the olden days come back in it yet" but apparently Harold is the only one to make an appearance so far. (Oh and Shane Ramsey this week, having just checked on My5.) (And another one - Malcolm Kennedy.) I ought to tune in for these final two weeks. I used to watch it back in the day with Mrs Mangel. Great character she was.
