Nest Cam

Buying a new build which will have Nest thermo and protect.

So had a read on Nest Cam as I was quite tempted to have everything under a single system, but I'm put off by the need to pay to record to cloud. No local save option :(

Agreed, but if anything did happen (burglary/fire etc) then cloud is a necessity as well. I presume it uploads on the fly so you'd capture any final moments.

It does but I would much rather if it gave me the option to record remotely to my desktop which will be on the network instead of having to pay 8 pounds a month as a minimum

Looks pretty neat. Been thinking about getting something like this to poke out my window to monitor the driveway.

Would kind of like one that at an ethernet hard line connection so it doesn't need to use wireless and can record locally.

Was looking at this the other day too, which looks pretty cool.

To be fair if you want local recording to a desktop without cloud you may as well just plug a webcam into a PC. Same for the above.

I'm not entirely sure on the practical uses for being able to talk through the Nest Cam either - the dog thing is a bit lame and niche. Useful for freaking out visitors though.

Yeah but a webcam does not have detection so would be moot, unless you were recording constantly and had some sort of software for detection based on video, which will not be as good... plus you'd need your desktop pretty close to the cam so the thief could spot and steal it?

Plenty of cheaper IP cameras about that do just as good a job. Without subscriptions. Just another trendy geeky product.

Agreed, would like to get one but put of by the high prices.

Bought my parents a ycam a fee months ago which was £100 and has free 7 day cloud storage.

We have 2 Dropcam Pros (The nest cam predecessor before the nest buyout) and they are very good in terms of video and sound quality although not cheap once you factor in the cost of the cloud recording.

The thing that I found annoying (and I presume nest have fixed) is that you had to manually turn them on or set them on a schedule. I assume that Nest will now turn them on via location or at they have at least opened up an IFTTT channel for them. The other thing I found is that they can be quite sensitive to things like light changes and interpreting them as movement, so one to bear in mind with placement to avoid notification spam on your phone.

Overall it is one of those purchases that doesn't really do much unless you get broken in to or have the desire to monitor your cleaner etc. We got them as a few flats in our building got broken into, we travel a lot and because the management company have keys to the flats (and I don't trust them). They definitely provide reassurance, but beyond that they're just there doing there thing.

Might actually get one for our office which completely skipped my mind at first. It's weird there's no real marketing material or sell to small businesses.

In fact I find their whole pitch quite weird; I showed my girlfriend the video earlier which I hadn't seen before and most of it was stupid. Leaving the cooker on, dog eating unpacked groceries etc. They also seem to assume you'll have one in every room for such uses.

The only realistic thing they promote is night time child monitoring.

I got mine the other day, havent had time to play properly but it works great over 4G. The dog could clearly understand my voice coming out of it. Also, interesting to see he gets up every few hours at night to find a new cold patch of floor and take a drink.

Going to try the Nest Aware stuff today

Just seen LED hut are launching at cam to, might be worth checking these out at half the price

I was looking at integrating the dropcam/nest cam into my home automation so I could monitor my garage, but the monthly subscription has killed it for me there.

Are there any cams that integrate with home automation software and record to a local NAS?

I want a camera that also uploads to an FTP server e.g uploads a still image and refreshes it every few minutes, depending on what I set it to, with an updated image.

Looked at it - it's too expensive for what it is. No local storage is a pain and being forced to pay for cloud storage isn't good. Burglars would just cut the internet connection to the home, take the camera and job done. I'd much prefer to have local and remote storage.

Camera looks nice though I'm not sure if it's worth £150.

Two AA batteries to power it? And claims to last a year?

I wonder how good the motion detection and video is. It only seems to do 10 second clips.

It says 20,000 seconds, so 333 hours or 13.8 days of solid recording per set of batteries.

Could be very interesting if it lives up to expectations.

That LumiCam looks decent. Never thought about having something like but as my downstairs is all open plan it could work quite well covering the whole area

Are there any reviews about for it anywhere yet? Looks good though as it has movement detection, night vision, 2 way audio, record to cloud or local, wifi or wired, wide angle lens and few other bits. What benefits does the Nest have over this?

Could have some fun whilst I'm out and Mrs is at home with the 2 way voice thing too haha! /childmode
