Nest Cam

Im not sure but i think that LumiCam is just a rebrand. The app it uses is called TofuCam so i think thats what it actually is?

"At 1080p, this requires 140 GB of upload bandwidth per month." Peaks at 1.2mbps of upload, per camera. That could cane some peoples internet connections.

. Burglars would just cut the internet connection to the home, take the camera and job done.

If they wanted (could) be techy they could go to even less trouble and flood the air with deauth wifi packets on an Android phone...

I'd much rather have a PoE camera so no need to run power to the camera, it is hardwired so not wasting wifi bandwidth nor have wifi connection problems. A local NAS and then a nice phone app like Nest have built.

The battery camera above looks good. If it could link into a NAS and something like one-drive that would be an instant buy for me.

Can't really find much info about the LumiCam (or TofuCam as it's really known) - looks like you can only buy them in bulk off Alibaba so its more than definitely a Chinese rebadge.

Looks good though but would rather wait for a few reviews before I part with my dosh.

Sorry, Nest Cam :).

One thing that's pretty silly is Google charging for delivery - a fair amount as well, £7.99 iirc. Every other retailer I looked at including Amazon, John Lewis and Currys was free delivery. You'd think they'd want to increase profits on each unit by cutting out the middle man but obviously not. Bought it from Amazon with Prime in the end, arrived today.

Bit of a bump, but I got one of these on Friday, all working reasonably well. Turns on when I set the thermostat to away, then in moving it to a different location, managed to drop it in a small jug of water! (One you top your iron water up with) Couldn't believe my luck.

Left it to dry out tonight and will see how it is in the morning :( Wonder what my chances are of a warranty replacement are...

Just taken interest in this as just moved into a new house & looking for a camera to monitor the drive & rear of house. Was thinking about Nest but that Y Cam looks good for the money and exactly what i need. Anyone with experience of them, would it be quality enough to monitor through a window?

Reading someone of the negative reviews on Amazon, I'm still happy I went with the Nest Cam.

For example, clips only record up to 10 seconds and then apparently can have over a minute before starting again. Someone else comments their camera was off line for a month before they got an e-mail to check all was okay. A month?! I get an immediate e-mail if mine goes off line (well, within 5 minutes). Someone else said it basically screws their home WiFi. Someone else says motion notification e-mails can take up to 60 minutes to come through.

Here's my review anyway :)

Im quite pleased with my nest cam, i use it to watch the dog but as im doing renovation work he isnt there during the day so i thought id point it out the window and see if it works.

Day time its perfectly fine, this is set to 720p. Ive cut the top off the pic but you can see the front garden really well, ive got a zone setup to left grass, path & right grass for fun.

To contrast, the cam is rubbish through a window when its dark, this was this morning

Ive recently bought a dropcam case for my nest cam so i can put it in the garden and see what the local wildlife does at night, im yet to test it but it claims to stop the reflection of the IR sensors. When not pointing through a window the night vision is spot on.

The only problem i have with nestcam is the £8 monthly fee for recording. I would like to try one of these Y Cams to see how they perform.

I'm going to pay a year in one go, comes down to £80 then. Additional cameras £40 a year. Doesn't seem too bad to me.

It's a shame it doesn't have the ability to record to a local device like a PC/NAS. Was looking into getting one of these but went against it when it didn't have that feature. :(

Can I ask why the preference to this? Is it just about removing the hosting cost?

Personally I like it's straight into the cloud, nothing the burglar can do about it then. Also means I can instantly review it on my phone.

You got to turn off the IR lights if you are sitting your camera behind glass as it just reflects it back at you

Ive just installed mine. I've got it set to "off when home" and "on when away", but it just seems to be on all the time? Any experience with that?
