NEST install

Does the NEST controller always have to be plugged in? Can I just take it off the wall and have it in the livingroom with me when I know I'm going to spend the day in there rather than the actively doing things around the house - at which point, back on the wall in the hall would make perfect sense.

needs to be plugged in, you'd be better off getting the stand and just taking the nest with you were you want to go (plugging in when you get to your preferred room)

although, i just leave mine where it is then just adjust as necessary using the app

Thanks for the response. Do I need to do anything with the grey one at the back (which isn't connected currently)? What about the earth? Keep that attached to the inbuilt cage?

electrical tape on the end, leave where is (or trace back to boiler and remove)

leave the earth connected to backbox (nest doesnt require earting)

what boiler you got?

other option is to remove all the wires back to the boiler and just run the ones you need (less wires going to the nest)

hey :)

it's a logic 35 combi boiler.

The black and brown wires are the timer wires, the problem is where the wires are, there's no power supply near, so I might have to get creative.

I've found where the wires go too, within the boiler (have to take from off and pull down the front cover). I can wire the heat link up from there, but need extra cabling to make that happen.

The more I dig deeper into it, the bigger a job its starting to look like! I have no idea how to get power to the thermostat (ideally don't want to move it), so I might have to get someone in to perform the install for me! :)

you should wire them in next to each other - see pictures below from the logic 35 installation manual.

L & N on boiler need to go to L & N on heat link

L also need to go to 2 on heat link

the far right on the 2nd picture needs to go to 3 on the heat link.

i bought this cable and cut the earth right back - http://www.screwfix.com/p/time-roun...-5-core-1mm-x-5m-white/68083?_requestid=51749

If he has a heating spur, and checks behind that. He is likely to find the connections that go to the stat, if so all he has to do is change a couple of them around and that will give him what he needs to fit the Nest.

We've got an Logic+ 35 Combi boiler which I installed the Nest into recently. I could take a photo of the wiring if that would help?

That would be helpful, thanks.

I don't believe we have a spur no. I can't find it if we do!! I can see the wires cooing into the boiler and as per the picture, I'll have to take the L and N from there.

Now just need a way of powering the thermostat!! :)

Thanks again for the help

What type of cable goes into the boiler?
white one, bottom left of picture (by pressure gauge).

This is the inside of the boiler (same wire).

As you can see the black and brown should be the same wires which are at the current thermostat (probably grey one too!). But the blue / neutral one, doesn't appear to be by the thermostat, which is a shame.

Cables disappear into the wall, no visable box (wall boiler is attached too is the utility, other side is the living room). I've checked the cupboards underneath and behind, also behind the dish washer etc, no boxes anywhere.

That cable doesn't go straight to the stat mate.

It's a different type of cable for one. Also the boiler is getting it's live, neautral and Earth from somewhere. It's likely a spur or at least a connection box somewhere you can't see.

Normally how I'd wire your heating system it.

Run a 3core and Earth to stat from a fused spur close to boiler. Do connections behind spur and run a 4/5core flex to the boiler. Which is what it looks like on yours also.

Just god knows where your spur is, but that boiler is getting power from somewhere. Did you say it was a new build?

yes new build :)

The black is labelled as "Room Stat Timer". As mentioned the white cable sleeve just disappears into the wall.

Below the boiler is a kitchen worktop, with the washing machine directly underneath and two cupboards underneath. I can see a copper pipe heading right (as you look at the boiler) but can't see any type of box, or anything similar which these would go into.

Yeah the black is your live return, they have wired it using a common live.

I'd be very supprised if there wasn't an isolation point for the heating in a new build :).

The boiler gets it power from somewhere. Does your CU have a separate RCBO/MCB for heating?

Yes there's a separate switch for heating so I can isolate it. It's in the downstairs toilet - probably 20-25ft away from the boiler and about 3ft away from the existing thermostat :p

There's likely going to be connector blocks behind that switch. Some changing of these could likely be all that's needed.

The heat link needs a Live, Neautral, Earth and a Live return cable to work. You potentially have all of that at your current stat, it's just not connected that way.

Brill, thank you :)

I best get someone in to do it for me then! :D

Thanks again ZG002 - really appreciate the advice.

you need to follow the wires back to where ever they go, then if this is not the boiler follow them again. (it will eventually end up at the boiler) then wire as per my instructions earlier.

looking at the initial picture you need to connect brown wire to point 2 on heat link and black to 3 on heat link(leave grey and earth as they are) you'll then need to run a separate cable for live/neutral from heatlink back to the boiler.

how close to the boiler is that thermo?
