Netgear D7000 VDSL modem/router

Hi guys, managed (like others it seems) to snag the ASUS-87u on the lightning deal as I was looking to give my 68u to a someone who fancied it at a fair price. As I have a while to cancel (shipping not for a couple of weeks) I was wondering if there could be any real benefit to getting one of the integrated units (such as the D7000 or D7800) instead of using the 87u with the openreach modem? I have a feeling not from reading around, but wanted to quickly check. Also, is the asus EA-87u the only 4x4 bridge available still (in order to maximise the 87u)?

It seems my SNR took a dive yesterday from 6db down to 4.9db. It has remained totally stable although not sure if it is Christmas tree light issues or not. Certainly not from my house as ours have been up for a week or two before this.

I had to fire up my Sky SR102 today as I wanted to re-build my D7000. The D7000 has been dropping 4-5Mb of speed every evening lately and at a max of 7.5Mb, this is serious. Sadly, the SR102 sync'd at over 9Mb whereas the D7000 gets to around 8.5Mb and it seemed to be less affected by FECs . The SR102 had a better SNR db connection and was stable! Such a dissapointment that it seems to perform better than the D7000. It's a good job that the D7000 has 5ghz and other "facilities" or I would be sorely tempted to re-install it permenantly.

Seems my D7000 went downhill after a very good couple of months. The OR modem is now easily outperforming the D7000. However, its not a bad wireless access point as that's all I'm using it for now, and if my HG612 and the spare I have just bought fail, then it will go back online doing VDSL duty.

My dB level is still low fluctuating between 4.8-5.1db. My msx attainable has also dropped by 5mb due to this. I'm hoping it's down to all the lights on throughout the street and not something more sinister.
The new billion is reportedly out in January so will maybe swap depending on feedback.

Mmm, might have a look at the HG612. Is there "somewhere" that shows how to set this upwith the D7000? CAn I still get mydslstats?

Yes because it uses a broadcom chipset.
If you go into the d7000 settings there is a mode to turn it into access point only.

If you just want to use the D7000 as a router and use the HG612 as a modem, then set the D7000 to use EWAN rather then VDSL. Goto Adavanced - Setup - WAN Setup - Select 'Must use ethernet WAN'

If you just want to use it as a WAP only you'll need something to do the routing from the EWAN to the LAN, I've built and am using a pfSense router. I then just set a static LAN address on the D7000 turn off the DHCP etc and plug the LAN output of the pfSense ( on mine it's via another switch ) into the D7000 so the wifi works and that's it.

pdes, you get the stats just the same, mine is like this

HG612 ---->pfSense---->Netgear GBit switch--->LAN--->HG612 ( Port 2)

So the addresses are like this

HG612 ( Port 1 - WAN Bridge )
pfSense (Opt0 - WAN Address )
pfSense (Opt1 - 192.168.1.254 )

Switch

HG612 ( Port 2 - 192.168.1.1 )
Netgear D7000 ( LAN - 192.168.1.253 )

Still use Roseways tool to get the stats and send, just select HG612 in the setup. You'll need to flash the HG612 that's all.

You can use the D7000 as the router instead of a pfsense device and switch and just connect one of the LAN ports back to the HG612 port 2, it works quite happily.

Looks like a Christmas project! Thanks. I bet I'll be leaning on you guys a bit later!

Cheers

No worries.. IF you decided to go the pfSense route, it's more complex then a normal domestic type router but it has all the bells and whistles you'll ever need. Setup can be a bit tricky but it's quite fun. :)

If you are interested I'll give you the info on the hardware I bought, it's very good and and there's a place in Germany that does the best prices. pfSense itself is free.

Sadly, I struggle with understanding the complexities of networking so can't see me needing the bells and whistles and being able to deal with "tricky" setups! In fact, access to more stats would be pretty dangerous for me and I would tie you guys down with endless questions. The old addage "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" springs to mind. In networking it can be disasterous! I honestly wish I could see it as "fun" but I guess I am just not wired that way. I just get obsessed about getting the best performance but without the level of knowledge needed. Still, I am retiring in 2016 so will have more time to soak it all up. :D

:) I quite understand.

In that case the option of just using an HG612 as the modem would suit you well. Just set the D7000 to using EWAN and all will work.

I am also obsessed with getting the best out of my line but I'm also obsessed with security, hence the pfSense path.

I have another seven and a bit years before I can call it a day, I'm looking forward to it, I've lots of things planned!

totally anecdotal.

It should not be, the D7000 has a much newer chipset.

In saying that, the HG612 has been around since the start of fibre in the UK and obviously the firmware has had a lot longer to be tweaked and tested on OR systems. The hacked firmware we are using is only a hacked version of the standard firmware allowing further tweaks not available on the BT/OR firmware.

I have had a fault on my line that has now been resolved ( faulty cable from the post to the house ) and it may well have been that which caused my issues with the D7000; however the HG612 was a lot more stable even when the fault was present; I have a very stable system now and I like the fact I have the pfSense in place, something I could not do if I put the D7000 back as the modem.

Right, off to search for an HG612. I am convinced that I have line interference as although I sync at anywhere from 8.5 to 9 Mb, I find that anything above 7.5Mb just causes the SNR to drop over a few days so if I could just hold on to the slightly higher speed, that would make a big difference.

OK, off to Ebay, don't pay more than thirty quid, some of the prices being asked are stupid.

Useful to have a 612 as a spare modem if nothing else. I have a spare 612 as well :)

Just for anyone else interested, The new Billion devices 8900AX-1600 and 8900AX-2400 are due for release in January. This came from Billion UK and a member on Kitz forum.
