Currently considering NAS drives to setup Time Machine backups myself and, from what I gather, pre-Lion they are generally fine but Lion changed something critical and required firmware updates for existing drives. Worth checking the manufacturer has one before buying.
You can probably ignore this if you are still using Snow Leopard or even earlier.

yeah thats the one and yeah i am on Lion. just did a bit on googling and it looks like Western have fixed this problem to make their product compatible

I'm considering an Iomega one but not sure if they have updated theirs yet. Its just that 2TB ones seem a little scarce and/or expensive in some retailers and that one has a USB port which might come in handy if a 1TB that is available is not enough in the long run. Other option is to wait but not sure what to make of the current hard disk supply issues and whether that would just make matter worse if they dry up or go up in price.
You should try looking in Dixons its relatively cheap.The western digital I'm looking at costs £138.25 from amazon but only £89.99 from Dixons.
Also if your looking for something expandable, wouldn't it be better to buy something like a NAS

The Iomega one is a tenner more for 1TB in their stores. Expandable was not really part of the original plan, it is just that the larger versions they sell are either out of stock locally (yes, I guess I could buy online) or more than I want to spend at the moment. From what I gather, anything more elaborate or higher spec (such as with spare bays) is also adding to the cost and 1TB might prove to be enough.
I am not new to PCs by any stretch but this is the first time I am considering dabbling in network hard drives and the Iomega one seems like one of the cheaper options that also offers some measure of expandability. Besides, I might give the print server functionality a try. It does sometimes prove to be a pain having to keep my main PC on when I want to print over the network and I cannot be bothered with getting a WiFi printer just yet.
Of course, I am open to suggestions for alternatives.
