Neverwinter Nights 2 Official Thread

Just had a play about in the 1st room with the camera angles and it sent my gfx card temp up to 80C!

Jesus!

Oblivion & Dark mess demo only sent it into the high 60s and that was in the summer months.

And?

The patch has been pulled - apparently they forgot to include the updated server software so that players who had patched couldn't connect. Also some reports of an immediate crash on game-start. They've promised a new version shortly.
Bah :(

Can people who have patched to it downgrade the patch somehow  :(

I just ran the updater and it said the latest version was 1.01, but it didn't download anything as I guess 1.02 is higher.

I'm assuming you need to use that fire potion thingy?
The druid in my group can always do the uber flame strike thingy :D

I tried a flame arrow, but in the end just used the torch she gave me :D

After about 20 hrs playing I'm going to be brief...

NWN2 is another example of a done to death formula which has its good points but the implementation and production values let it down. Bad optimisation, trying to be an Oblivion wannabe in the graphics stakes but failing dismally. Bad gameplay mechanics. Shocking AI. Bugs galore, Etc.

Having said that though, the core of the game is decent enough if you still hark for a more traditional rpg. It's a Baldur's Gate clone for sure imo. And I liked Baldur's Gate so that aint a bad thing....but as said, very sloppy/rushed programming....another great opportunity missed.

/sigh

I'm loving NWN1, trying to get HOTU fin before Christmas, when this may be a gift for me :p

By then, hopefully the patches will fix the patching process(!), the sluggish performance, the blocky graphics on casting, the camera angles, the script misfires, Xfire incompatability, and that's before people start Munchkinning, and they start having balance issues.

I haven't played the game, mostly I've just read this thread, but it sounds full of promise yet diappointing. I hope the patches for NWN2 are as rich as NWN1 patches (often including new content), as I'd like all the graphics to look next gen (re: casting gfx), but conversely I prefer 2D art style portraits :o

Just my 2p.

I'm hoping the level of patches in NWN2 is better than in 1.

I'm sure it will be. The makers really listen to the players, and its what made the community work well last time.

Not only will the bugs be fixed by then, i expect huge tweaks in GFX department and game engine, otherwise, i wouldn't of bought the game.

I can put up with it all right now offline, but in a couple of months i hope the game is glowing and online gaming is as fun in this one as the last one, the single player campaign is just here to pass the time.

Cool, this is exactly what I was hoping to hear. It's a game I've been really looking forward to and have powered through OCs to get it finished by Christmas (after getting sucked in by fan made mods multiplayer with buddies).

Last thing I want is to get fed up part way through cos bugs\gfx glitches get too much.

Just trying to figure out what your comparisons are supposed to be showing, considering they are all completely different to each other.

Yeap, it needs a hafty system to run, but when you appreciate the amount it is doing you can understand it. Sure, pan the camera into a first-person position and it sucks compared to Oblivion. The thing is, anyone who has played NWN before *knows* that it traditionally is top-down, and that is where you can see the detail/style/effort.

Oh, and for those that jumped in and hated it, take a look at how NWN1 progressed. It took time for NWN1 to really get going, I expect the same here. NWN1 sucked when it first came out, NWN2 is already starting better. It takes time to make a fine wine...

All i was doing was giving an observation, I've never seen my gfx card hit that kind of temp before, it was quite scary, considering i was just moving about, and was in a tiny room.

Not keen on the camera, its the same as the 1st nwn's but it keeps dumping me in difficult angles where i cant even see my main character (especially when going indoors) I dont want it in 1st person, i just want a reliable top down angle like the 1st game, but i wasn't comparing the angles in each game, like i said, just giving an observation of the temp it hit.

While were on about the camera, what are the best settings forit, in your opinion?

Is there any way to get your rogue henchmen to auto stealth for fights? No matter what i set things to in the Behaviour page everyone jsut seems to charge into combat and start swinging no matter the class.

I'm a from a slight-angle-from-above-but-miles-away person. I think only one place has caused an issue, mainly due to the room being so high. I can't say it's moved around indoors for me, I think the only time it moves is when I'm under a large outside object, but then it moves back when you are clear.

Am in the same ball park, its how i played the previous, but cant seem to get it right at the moment.

Also, the game detected maximum settings which i feel is a little ambitious for the rig, what should i knock down to help it run a bit smoother?

I am now on ACT3 and i need to build an army i also have the Ironfist hammer... i will not spoil how you get it

Best game this year since act 2

trying to be an Oblivion wannabe in the graphics stakes but failing dismally.

What are you on about? Just because it has open landscapes and a fantasy setting aswell? NWN2 is zoned, for one. Oblivion just moved the goalposts in terms of what was possible graphically, they did nothing new.

Bad gameplay mechanics.

I think they're spot on myself. Now Oblivions are poor....

Now maybe its just me, but why is it that the first thing anyone thinks about in terms of games is graphics? "zOMG, if I zoom right in on his eyelash its only a single poly, so lame" - cue two million rolly eyed smileys.

And how people can even compare this to Oblivion is beyond me. Yes, Oblvions game world is awesome - it is without a doubt the best gaming world I've ever come across. However the games mechanics are chronic! Auto-levelling baddies? Completing the game on level1? Item drops that auto-adjust to your level? Endlessly repeating dungeons? Oh look, I go back to the start of the game and the bandits have the same uber-armour as me? There's no feeling of power, missions are totally unrewarding...console-afied to appeal to the kiddies to the nth degree.

Yes yes, matter of opinion - but its just ****s me right off the people seem to be under the impression that Oblivion, because it has the best graphics, its immediately the better game.

And no, NWN2 isn't perfect - I'm not making that claim. Its got a few rough edges, but its still early, and the developers response to the community has been excellent, so I'm sure its only going to get better.

I've found that to get the best performance/quality mix, I turned off all water effects (reflection, refraction) which dropped my framerate by about 15 even with no water :o , turned off soft shadows, normal mapped terrain and point light shadows.

I still had shadow quality on high but in advanced I turned all of the shadow map sizes to their minimums. Can't tell the difference between minimum and maximum but get a huge frame boost.

Good man I was just cursing the game for running like a pig on my PC but those settings you suggested worked a treat :D
