New Apple Hardware - Today?

There's product identifiers in the latest 10.6.2 build showing new MBs and MBPs if you're interested.

Should be shipping soon :)

I recall an excellent circular reasoning on MacRumors regarding quad cores in MBPs:

Why would you want a quad in a laptop? If you want power, you need a desktop.

Power on the move is extremely useful.

For example running your company's software in a VM during a sales demonstration.

If you want the very best power, then yes, a desktop would be a wiser choice. If you want some serious grunt but enjoy the portability of a laptop, then it easily muddies the water of that logic.

Cheers m8. Gonna either get the top-spec or give it a month & see if they replace those old skool duals with i3's :)

It'd be very unlike apple to change them so early after their release, I'd say January at the earliest or more likely April time before the lower end machines move to quad cores...

But as always, only Steve Jobs knows really...

I've got an early 2008 24" iMac and I am really tempted to upgrade to the 27".

I reckon I could get £700-ish for this so not have too much to put towards... maybe after Xmas :p

Still thinking about it here (very seriously), would be my first mac. Is the i7 worth it over the i5 though? Then again, am thinking if I didnt go all out I would just end up regreting it. Still, that would pay for the apple care if I stuck to the i5.

Went and saw the monitor again in the apple store, the rez is pretty damn superb.

Just remember that the applecare only gets you extra telephone support. Do you really need it?

Applecare gets you two years hardware support, which sounds worthwhile to me on a £2k computer.

True, but if you buy via the Higher Education (HE) store then you get 3 years free hardware support as standard.. which is what he was referring to.

Obviously, if this is a "normal" purchase then it doesn't apply.

Depends what you're planning to do with it really, lets face it for the vast majority of people's usage the base config is easily enough. Without context it's impossible to say.

Personally I'd say it's difficult to justify the i7 over i5 for even power users but it's an individual decision and I suspect for most people reading this forum the slightly irrational desire to have the latest and greatest (how many people are upgrading recent 24" imacs again??) trumps cold logic about the value for money.

Tried out the new mouse in the trafford centre yesterday. Hate to say it, but the right mouse click still doesnt work if you have your left finger resting on the mouse..... why oh why....... jesus.

I actually didn't notice that. I've just tried it on my wireless mighty mouse and you're right!

How weird.
