New Apple Hardware - Today?

Just realised, are there no side squeezy parts on the new mouse? Highly doubt I'll get one if its missing that as I use that for Epose and middle click for Spaces!

Just buy a Logitech (with side buttons) and configure it then :p

These iMacs look amazing.. can't wait to buy one, in about a year! haha

The big problem with these new HUGE resolution displays, is gaming. At 2560 by 1440, decent gaming performance is out of the question.

The only saving grace will be the kind of options available to you when plugging a 360/PS3 into the iMac to use it as a screen. Will it have 1-to-1 pixel mapping? Having to upscale the images from 1900x1080(p) to 2560 by 1440 is still going to make the image un-sharp/naff.

Don't see it myself, a tougher metal case, fw800 and (I believe) more memory expansion for £100 more - I can't understand not buying the pro!

More people than you'd think really go for the white Macbook's looks. The MBP is more popular where I work but when I worked at Lakeside the white was noticeably closer. The customer at this place tends to have a bit more wedge than those at Lakeside quite often I've noticed.

I think the gap coming down to £100 may change things though. We'll see.

iMacs have never really been serious gaming platforms though, have they? More for casual gamers or gamers who don't care about running at native res.

Depends what you count as a serious gamer? I'd class myself as a casual gamer, not playing for weeks sometimes, but I still like my games to look their best. You're even going to struggle with source based games on these things. I guess I'm always going to have to keep a windows desktop for gaming, as much as I would love to get rid of it!

If you run a game every so often then iMac/MBP is fine but I think Apple assume that if you're a hardcore gamer you're either Console gaming, running windows+self built PC or at a push could use a Mac Pro (even then these take a while to have the latest gfx cards).

Wouldn't say I'm a big gamer either so all I would want to run is maybe McRae dirt and flight sim x. Not sure how it would perform but I'm sure it would be better than my old 2ghz amd xp3000 machine at home.

Being able to use 2560x1440 day in, day out on the desktop by far trumps reduced suitability for gaming for that type of computer.

It's a trade off with a positive net result.

If you're that worried about native res issues when gaming, you're probably not the type to buy an imac anyway.

Ok, but even plugging a blu-ray drive in and using the thing as just a screen there is going to be upscaling from 1080p which is going to make video look like bum too.

Dont get me wrong though. Day to day desktop usage is going to ROCK.

Does anyone know if the new Mac mini can carry sound over the mini-DisplayPort or mini-DVI? I'd like to replace my Dell Vostro 420 with one but that's a crucial requirement.

iMacs only have a display output for a second monitor. As far as I know you cannot input a video signal onto the screen, unless this has changed on the new models?

Nope, you'd have to run a stereo or digital cable to something for sound. The Mac Mini itself does have a little speaker but it's rubbish. Really bad.

The new ones can take Displayport input.
