Hi all i just built my fist ever pc and i have a asrock z68 extreme 4 gen 3 mobo with i5 2500k cpu and a radeon 6950 gpu with 4 gb ram i installed windows then installed the drivers from the disks (motherboard and graphics card), not over clocked at all yet but i installed a game and whilst i was playing the screen turned blue for a second then system reebooted ? any ideas as to what this could be ? i have played the game for 1 and a half hours today and its been fine (longer than i was on it yesterday) could this just be a slight glitch or maybe corupt windows ? not sure at all b(or could it maybe cpu overheat or something simple)

also one more question is it really as easy to overclock as it says in this forum http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18311089

any help would be great
thanks Dean

best bet is download coretemp or realtemp and keep an eye on your temps as you game.

if it blue screens again it would be worth you changing the settings so it doesn't reboot so you can get the full message.

other thing is check your event logs see if they show anything for the time it crashed.

Overclocking really is easy, but obviously wouldn't touch it until you diagnose the problem :D

A "blue screen" could be anything, if it happens again, try and get a photo of what it said. I am taking a bit of a stab in the dark, but it is likely one of two things. Temps, or power.

Once you understand what it is (power/temps) then you can start diagnosing what is causing the problem. A brief guide below.

a) a Power issue - Put your system parts in here http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp , and check to see how much power you "need". Does your PSU wattage cover it? If it does, great, but sitll, what PSU are you using (brand/model). You can get a 550w PSU for "cheap" but they aren't very good at all. If it your PSU doesn't cover it, that could be a problem.

b) a temperature/heat issue - Monitor your CPU temps at idle, and then under load. This is what I use, but there are lots of other monitoring/benchmarking tools:

- Real Temp - Monitor CPU temps - http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/
- FurMark - A GPU test - http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/
- Prime - A CPU stress test (leave it run a good few hours) http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/default.php

If it is then a heat problem, then you can diagnose what is causing it. Cooler not fitted correctly (I am sure you are using the stock one? Should be fine without an overclock). Could be a poorly designed build (easy done for the first one, could be getting a bit cramped in there, what case are you using? How much space is there?).

As you can see, as with most PC issues, it could be many different things. The only way to fix it, is to trouble shoot.

In summary, check your power consumption. If that is OK, check your temps (CPU idle around 30-40degrees should be OK, under load, no more than 85-90degrees at an absolute max, although it can handle higher without breaking).

If your temps and power is fine, then I am stuck :D if it happens again, then the blue screen information may tell us what the problem is.

Good luck.

ok thank first of all how do i change settings so it doesnt reboot and also how do i check events log ?

i am connected to the net on the pc but my avg isnt updating so what is the best all round anti virus to get ? i love the way avg has firewall and anti virus and the rest so only need that one program any reconmendations ?

off to work now but will go on pc tonight and if anyone could tell me how to make system so blue screen stays on and doesnt reeboot would be great also how to check events log and is avast good as avg and does it have evything like avg does including firewall and anti virus and anti spyware etc ?

thanks for help will be back tonight

thanks alfbaxter and was it easy to overclock ur system same mobo as me, look at the link up on this page did u just do that ?

don't think it should matter what version of windows your on, so :

to stop the auto reboot, go into control panel/system

click the Advanced system settings, then startup and recovery section near the bottom of the window and click on the settings button.

then locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.

Click OK and you should be done.

take it your not using avg and the windows firewall together ?

I don't think there is a way to stop the auto reboot, it is a safety feature (maybe can be disabled, but I don't know?)

If you can't get a picture of the error, then try and jot down anything you see. A code, reference, a fault, would help massively.

EDIT: ^^ Good post from the guy above, didn't know you could disable it :)

thanks people will go and do that now and try and get it to happen agin, no not using avg and windows firwall together will do that now anyway thanks ppl

thanks for that mp260767 just done that been on computer a lot latey and been fine but if happens agin will write down all information from blue screen, got my AVG working so that should be enought as has firewall and anti virus etc, thanks for help guys appreciate it, going to look into overclocking my rig now so hope its very easy lol
is it really this easy and if so should you only overclock to 4.0ghz then do some test ?not really got a clue going to research it

4ghz and a bit of testing sounds fine, its a good starting point, then see how far it will go keeping decent temps and not needing too much vcore through it :).
