Spent 4 hours bulding a computer last night to find out its not booting,
basically whats happening is that i turn it on, the LEDs at the front flash and then turn off.
I think it could be a short circuit so i will check the mobo is not touching the case but i did get it working ONCE!!!
turnt it off, put the ram in (was troubleshooting and wondered if it was RAM), then it flashed again... since then its not worked at all, i've tried taking out ram again, tried taking out GPU, playing about with plugs too, here is the spec

AMD Phenom II X4 955 with stock CPU Cooler
XMS3 Corsair RAM , 4 GB
ASUS GTX460 768mb GPU
Zalman Z7 Plus case
Gigabyte 880GM-UD2H Atx mobo
Corsair CX500W PSU
Samsung F3 500gb hdd
Samsung ODD

any suggestions welcome :)

Thank You,

Jamie.

ive tried the different slots and the other stick too, the thing is, when i took out the RAM, i played about with a few plugs aswell, and it booted, turnt it off to put ram in and i cant remember what i did to make it run :/

NO signs of melted plastic or broken connectings on the MOBO, although a standoff wasnt screwed in properly, im not sure it was screwed in at all, could that be the problem?

I would take the Motherboard out of the case and sit it on some cardboard, then test it to see if it boots up ok. Check and make sure you have used all the required standoffs for your Motherboard whilst your doing this.

Ive used all the standoffs, what the most basic things i need in a build to post, CPU ram and mobo ? also can i plug in a speaker to the mobo to listen for beeps?

  • Remove everything from the case and build it on an anti-static bag or cardboard box.
  • Only use one stick of RAM, no hard drives, no optical drives and use the onboard graphics.
  • Have you tired both sticks of RAM in each of the DIMM slots?
  • Are both the 24 pin and 8 pin motherboard powers connectors attached? Disassemble and reattach those firmly, they should both click into place.
  • Remove and reattach the stock cooler.

ed;
  • When installing a single RAM stick, install it into the BLUE DIMM closest to the the CPU, try both sticks on their own in that DIMM.

i would try this but how would i know if the mobo is working, i dont think it has an oboard speaker :/

Do you hear any beeps during post?

You should be able to hear beeping without having to connect any external speaker to the motherboard.

Does the CPU fan spin at all?

im just following your advice at the moment, but the CPU is stuck to the thermal paste on the cooler !? once this is sorted out i will try a boot

ok, ease it off gently by rotating it and not pulling it off. Be careful not to get thermal paste on any pins or bend them.

You'll need to reapply the thermal paste too.

i dont have any,, the stock thermal paste thats on is still there, can i still use it ? ;/

Depends on how much of it has come off and if it is still spread evenly. Use a clean plastic bag wrapped tightly around your finger to spread it to make sure its even and with no air bubbles. Then it should be ok for a short period and as long as your not overclocking. You will have to buy some and reseat the cooler later tho.

No, it's best to clean it off gently with an alcoholic wipe or something similar, then reapply new paste.

Otherwise it may not be spread evenly when you reapply and will not work effectively.
